I was under the impression that HS girls cannot even try out for a travel team right now because that would put them in violation of OHSAA rules. Am I misunderstanding the rules on this one?

Crystle ... the only "confusion" on this is about what really defines the start of the high school season ... technically it says something like "first scrimmage" ... even so, as you know, most travel teams involving high school girls suspend practices, etc. when the high schools officially start practicing.

Below is how the OHSAA Non-Interscholastic Participation Rule reads.

A member of an interscholastic softball squad (any student who has played in a scrimmage,
preview or regular season/tournament game as a substitute or starter) sponsored
by the Board of Education or other governing board shall not participate in a
non-interscholastic program (tryouts, practice or contest) as an individual or as a
member of a team in the sport of softball during the school’s season. This regulation
is applicable for those invited to participate in a tryout, group training or practices at
a college or in contests, tryouts, group training or practices with any non-school team
such as a club. (Sports Regulation 6.3).

Right ... and based on I believe past discussions with the OHSAA, they have defined the "school's season" as the time of the first scrimmage ... but then you have to define scrimmage!

Doesn't the OHSAA define dates when Sports can begin?
I know with the PIAA the Dates are set MARCH 2 is the first day for tryouts, etc -

2014-2015 PIAA SCHEDULE OF SPORTS? EVENTS

I think it stinks the OHSAA holds girls hostage if they want to play sports. I still don't think it's right that they cant participate in whatever sport they want to in there spare time.

So, does this mean that Travel Season for High School age girls in Ohio can Only run June 14 through February 22?

No, they can start competing with their travel ball team when their high school season is over. JV players that don't play with varsity can be released by their high school coach after the jv season is over to compete with their travel team .

So they can start as early as April 20 or as late as June 14 depending on how good their school team is?

So best for a team not to have to many girls from the same school.

4.8) Individual Non-Interscholastic Competition Dates: A softball athlete who has not participated for a school team in softball that season mustcease non-interscholastic softball competition six weeks (42 days) prior to the Mondayof the State Tournaments in softball in order to be eligible for OHSAA Tournamentcompetition provided applicable bylaws and regulations have been followed. Date: April 20, 2015.

If the coach would allow it, I guess a girl could wait to April 20, to compete with their high school team.

Depending how good a girls high school team will determine how early they could compete for their travel team. EX a team gets beat in the sectionals and their season over May 20th could then go play with their travel ball team. A girls team who plays in the state finals would not be eligible until after their state finals game. I have heard of girls who played in the state finals during the day, then that night play with their travel ball team because their high season is over after the state finals. My best guess is the June 13th date was put in place so high school coaches couldn't keep practicing with their team.

This is actualy a lot clearer than what I have always heard - I still think it stinks.
Is there a similer rule for all the other sports?

We were told by the School in the Spring sports meeting that the girls are not allowed to play TB until the BANQUET for the sport is over !!! This would mean that they are one & done in the tournement and may be as much as 2 weeks after the season is over until the BANQUET !!!!

Can individual HS's overrule what is already established by the State governing body?

I do not know. Thatis what we were told by our AD at the meeting. I had talked with the Lady from the OHSAA at the coaches clinic in Columbus and she told me the entire reason behind all of this "stuff" is that Ohio is Focused on the SCHOLAR aspect of the Sch

That is just totally ridiculous!!! You could have a horrible team that wins 2 games all season & is done by May 13th - yet doesn't have banquet planned till after Memorial Day & the girls can't play/practice with travel team.........that is some Coach/AD helping to ruin their own program!

The day the girl has no games left to play, they should be able to do whatever they want!!! PERIOD!

Yes, there is a similar rule for all sports. The crazy thing is if you are playing high school softball you are allowed to play JO softball or AAU basket etc., you just can't play travel/club softball during the high school season.

That's the most ridiculous thing I've heard, funny! You think they would encourage the players to start as soon as they can, they would be that much better the next season!

I believe the rule also states that you can't have any more than 4 from the same school on your travel team.

That is only if the team is coached by school coaches.
The vast majority of your community rec. teams for example in the High school division of http://sogfsa.org/ are filled with ladies from the same school.
I can think of about half the teams in our league and several outside of our league that fielded teams over the years in fall/winter and summer leagues and tournaments coached by others outside of the school.

I also know of several HS teams over the years that had fall/winter and spring teams coached by others outside of the school.

You can not have more than 4 from same school playing Fall Ball!
Only Memorial Day thru Aug. 1 that all could play together & Indoor - If some do/have - they are breaking the rules.....
