If a team has a berth to eastern nationals, but the team decides not to go, can a player from that team play for another team legally?

Assuming you're talking ASA, yes. (As long as the player is officially released from team A before attempting to be rostered for team B)

'Must be an ugly scene if you disband after qualifying for Eastern Nationals...

Obviously not hypothetical! The team has not disbanded. They are still currently together, but we have had a lot of younger players quit for what they think is "greener pasture"! Unfortunately, this is my dd's last year at 16U and she would love to play nationals! The chance of our current team doing that are getting slimmer each tournament. So I need to keep the options open for her at this point. I just want to know what I need to do if my dd becomes available for Nationals!

The team she would go to play for at Nationals would need to fill out the pick-up player form. It's available online. The coach she use to play for would need to sign it, new coach signs it, and Warren Jones signs it. Take it to nationals with her ASA card and ID and she would be good to go.

If your season is over and/or a team disbands prior to championship play, is a release necessary?

Are you sure about the prior coach having to sign it? The form I found online only has signature for new coach. Getting the ASA card from prior coach does save hassle of getting a replacement card.

Warren Jones signs for Ohio ASA teams. Metro teams would go to their commisioner.

I have heard so many different opinions on this but last I heard I thought the player had to be released before the State tournament to be eligible? Is this not correct?

I believe they do if the team they are leaving is going to actually play at Nationals. Is that correct?

You are correct...Previous team manager does not need to sign it. You do need to put the team, division, & class of previous team. New team manager signs it, and has the local commissioner or designee sign it. It's pretty simple. Here is a link to the form with the rules for picking up players attached.

Player Release is necessary to change teams after being redlined on a championship roster (i.e. started championship play). This has to be done before the local association's roster change deadline.

Once a player's team has finished championship play (i.e. not playing any more qualifiers or going to nationals), they are eligible to be picked up by a team going to nationals. Basically, Class A teams can pick up 3 additional players from teams in their local association at the same classification or lower. See ASA Code Article 503 for all the regulations.
