what are the rules for college coaches in talking to athletes as far as softball goes. I thought they could talk beginning sept 1 of their junior year. I had a college coach say she cant talk to dd until summer of senior year.

any info would be appreciated

... but, keep in mind that the information on that link only pertains to D1.

September 1 of Junior year they can start e-mailing players. July 1 after junior year they can call 1 time per week. Of course they can talk to you if you are at their camp or on their campus and the kids can call or e-mail them as much as they want but they cannot return a call or e-mail before the above dates. This is why camps are so imprtant if you really want to go to a certain school.

Our DD has been able to talk to many coaches by going to the camps. Lots of time and money invested but we have gained a lot of info from the coaches.

Most people assume incorrectly that Div. I rules apply to all colleges. There are different rules for each NCAA level, and entirely different rules for JC and NAIA. Way too many different rules to list here, so my advice would be to do the research (NCAA rules are free at the NCAA.org site) and know the rules before contacting coaches.

Monday evenings were always popular "phone call" evenings at our house. DD always made sure she was home then - because if the recruit misses the call, (at least for DI) they cannot call the coach back.

I agree about the camps. That's the time to ask LOTS of questions. Every coach can rattle off those contact rules in a condensed version that's easy to follow. Also, most camps have a recruiting clinic of sorts where the coach will explain all this stuff. Pay close attention and take LOTS of notes...

And just seconds after I posted the link above, I get this incorrect assertion from a girl in her e-mail....

"Anyways, I know you are unable to initiate contact with me due to my age (2013 grad), but wanted to keep you in the loop with how I performed and I'll be playing in the Surf City Early Thanksgiving Showcase 11/21/10 in Huntington Beach, Ca."

Wrong. I won't not recruit a girl because she doesn't know NCAA recruiting rules, but it would be nice to know they have done their homework on basic recruiting rules for coaches to whom they are writing.

D2 summary of rules (very brief summary):

We can email a kid at any time prior to Sept. 1st of junior year, as long as it is not related to softball recruiting. For example, we can talk about about camps or our academic programs.

Starting Sept. 1st of Junior year, we can have email contact about specific softball related items.

We are permitted to have phone contact starting June 15th prior to senior year. We can talk to athlete or parent once per week.

Also starting June 15th, we are permitted 3 off-campus face to face contacts, as long as the player is not currently playing in a tournament. We must wait till their team is completely finished playing in the tournament before we can talk.

Common misconceptions:

The whole email thing prior to junior year. Many interpret the rules incorrectly. As long as no recruiting is taking place, it is permitted. I know, it is a very gray area.

An athlete is permitted to call us at any age, as much as they want. We just can't return their calls prior to the June 15th date or if we have already made one phone contact per week during the permitted time.

We can only say hi to you or your parent during a tournament. I once had a lady follow me to the portajohn, insisting I was allowed to talk to her and her daughter because "everyone else was doing it."

An athlete can make an unofficial visit at any age, and can make unlimited unofficial visits.

An athlete is only allowed 5 official visits, regardless of Division.

Contact is permitted via Facebook only by private message, and by Twitter only thru direct messages. Any type of public exchange (facebook wall), chat, or instant message is prohibited. Text messages are prohibited, but a way around that is to have your Facebook private messages sent to you as text messages.

Thanks, coach, for the helpful information!

I'm snipping this and printing it off. This info ought to be posted once a month on these pages.
