Had two old guys yesterday that I suspect do a lot more baseball than they do softball. In the 7th inning, we had one player left that was eligible to be a courtesy runner. She was wearing 17 but listed on the lineup card as 7. 7 is her normal uniform number but we were playing a cancer benefit game with special uniforms and for some reason she was 17. She was reported by the coach as a courtesy runner and on first base when the home team coaches came running out of the dugout raising a big ole fuss to the umpires insisting she should be called out. They called her out. I keep our team book and went to home plate with our coach to get an explanation. I told the umpire that she wasn't an illegal substitution but an incorrect lineup and that was corrected by writing the correct number on the lineup cards and issuing a warning to the coach. He told me to be quiet and that we're going to play ball. Was I correct?

High school rules? Then you were correct.

Generally, most all rule sets go by the players name, not their number. If the number is wrong on the line-up card, you correct it and play on.

In high school play, they do require a warning to the coach for submitting an incorrect line-up. Any subsequent line-up changes result in the coach being restricted to the dugout.

I'm guessing that, though correct, you weren't given much latitude because you were a scorekeeper on the field. That's typically not going to go over well.
