So since tryout season is just around the corner, is it benificial or wise to, or start to contact teams that you may be interested in before the tryouts begin. I have not done this in the past but am beginning to wonder if this is the norm (from what i am hearing). Any replys would be appreciated, PM me if you need to.

Thanks

This is our first year doing try outs and I m struggling with the same type of questions.

I can't see only tryiong out for 1 team, because what if that team decides they don't want your DD?

At the same time it seems all the tryouts are at the same time, so I am going to have to contact the coaces to try and arrange another tryout time I guess.

Of course first I have to find out what teams to try out for, right now the short list is very short with 2. I would like to add about 3 more to have my DD covered.

I would say it is the norm, with Nationals and other things that go on there is not enough time at the end of the day for coaches to wait and see who is coming they want to know. JMO

I think it's smart to contact teams you may be interested in ... get more info about the organization, team, coach, etc. Would you wait till you take a new job to ask questions about whether the job and the company make sense for you? While you can wait till tryouts (i.e., the "interview"), why tryout for a team that, if you had done your homework on, might not be a fit, especially when most tryouts are in a very short span of time and most organizations need answers on offers ASAP?

I say contact them now, it gives you a chance to get some info before the tryout. I know I don't mind getting texts, phone calls, or e-mails with questions about the team or tryouts...'tis the season!!!

Go to some stronger teams try-outs and see what they do and then judge from there. The teams in your dd's age division that are on top are there for a reason. I would call it the best learning curve out there. See where your kid stacks up and if its not with them thats ok, ask the coach what she needs to work on and keep going from there.

The try outs are not just for the player but also for the coach. It is a long year if the coach and the organization is not a fit for your family. I REALLY recommend going to a tournament game your perspective team is in and watch the team and the coaching staff in action. That is where you will get a true representation of the real picture. If you see what you like then by all means make an initial contact prior to the try out process.

This is a subject we've talked about at home for a while now. We learned from experience that players have to look for the best situation for their own sake. We've had teams we very happy with fall apart due to a variety of reasons, leaving us in a lurch. We have learned to keep our options open. So we told our dd to watch other teams at tournaments to see if there were any that impressed her. We waited until we were sure what our dd wanted to do, then last week I started to collect as much info on teams and tryouts as I could. After our dd supplied a list of teams she was interested in, and we as parents suggested organizations we thought she would be interested in as well. And discussions have ensued. There are other teams that will come to the fore over the next few weeks as well.

One of the things that I keep in mind is a couple years ago, when we were constantly assured by the organization dd was with, that they were very pleased with dd and wanted to keep her. So we ignored the tryouts. Low and behold, the team decided "to go in a different direction, except all the scheduled tryouts were completed by then. One team, the Marion Diamonds, needed a pitcher, so our dd had a personal tryout in September. The coaches were gentlemen and were very kind to our dd. As a pitcher who was just completing her first year as a travel ball hurler, she wasn't what they needed, but said if they had seen her during the initial tryouts, they would have offered her a spot as a 2nd or 3rd pitcher because of her potential and hitting ability. I apologize for this opus, but ID the teams and coaches that interest you and get there early in the tryout season.

Nothing wrong with that at all, and can be beneficial in getting some upfront knowledge or insight on potential teams for your daughter. I know that we've had parents and players approach us at just about every tournament this season to inquire about our team, and I think that's a healthy approach. It's happened with teams that we've either beaten or lost to, so we must be doing something right to at least warrant their attention.

By the same token, I wouldn't begrudge any player of ours that decides to do the same. It's a long year with many twists and turns, and finding the right fit can sometimes take time, but it's probably the most important factor in an athletes career is finding where they fit in. Both mentally and physically.

I've had parents approach me in the past 2 weeks... each one had the statement... my coach knows I'm talking to you for reason XYZ and they know I'm here now... pretty cool! Clean, ethical, and with the right motivation. Other parents made the trip or phone calls after the season for their team was over. I'm still a believer in not talking about next year till next year so that limits my conversations with anyone not on the roster. Fair is fair. We commit to a season and that's the bottom line and even though player greed may get exciting, it's just not right as a coach to be all into the next season till then.

Ditto Klump! I have looked at no less than 15 players this past week and will see another 3 or 4 tomorrow night at practice. I like seeing these girls come to the practice, meet the team, coaches, and get more than a segment of 120 minutes to determine whether or not this is a good fit.

I appreciate the feedback from the coaches here. My family has been struggling with this same issue for my daughter. She's played with Hurricanes (NOS) Burk all year as an 11U player on a 12U team, and has loved playing at this level, against some of the hardest teams in the state and in some of the better tournaments! With her team moving up next year, we're trying to find a home for her that allows her to continue to play at the same level she played at this year, and continues to provide her with the type of coaching that she's received this year to allow her to continue to grow as a player and to provide her with a challenge. This post has helped a lot! And, yes, her coach knows we've been working on this and has been very helpful with his suggestions! thanks!

Yes Paula, you have been completely upfront with this and I respect you for this. Rose is an awesome player who will make any team better.
