No. Well, yes, but no...lol. If she works out with the HS team once they have had their first scrimmage, I believe she loses one year of HS eligibility, even if she only practices with them for 1 day.

At least, that is how I am understanding it. I'm sure someone much wiser about these things will chime in.

FYI
35.3) 7th & 8th grade students may not practice with, participate on the same team with or compete
against 9th through 12th grade students.
35.4) Students below the 7th grade may not practice with or participate with 7th through 12th
grade students.

You are asking about a 7th grader being able to "work out" with a HS team. Do you mean she is conditioning with the team or participating in a skills practice? I would think the former is ok but definitely not the second.
Not to highjack the thread but what about a sixth grader standing behind a pitching screen and throwing short distance BP to the varsity team? Would that be against the regs?

There is a fine line. Practice this year began February 25th and goes through June 15th, which is the official day that OHSAA states the season is complete. As stated previously, 7th and 8th graders can not practice with HS age kids period...end of story. If they are "working out, conditioning" during this time period with the HS team they may be in violation, as OHSAA does not have this spelled out so clearly. Outside of these dates you would be ok as time outside the season is considered "Open Gyms" and anyone can participate according to OHSAA. I have seen many a JH kid playing basketball with HS age kids during open gyms outside the season, they just cant in season.

In years past I have seen JH or younger age kids being "managers" for the softball team, just like you do in football and even basketball....Those kids that are shagging fly balls or kicks, and returning them to the coach or player. Could even be a kid playing catch or receiving punts, all during the season. Is this considered practice??? I don't know if OHSAA considers it practice, but I don't. Even the one throwing soft toss from behind the screen I would consider to be ok, but OHSAA may not.

In closing, I believe we all know how a practice runs. All the girls participate from start to finish in all the drills and are working out together in a group. If you have one or two individuals that are just there shagging balls, doing some soft toss, I think you would be alright. Where you might get into trouble is when you have those same players throw with the team during warm-ups, then throw on catchers gear and warm up a pitcher, then go over to 1B and take throws from infielders and then finish off the day throwing BP from behind a screen. Use some common sense and you should be alright. IMHO...FWIW

I would say no to all scenarios listed.
The word (participate) covered in ohsaa rules I think says it all.
Younger girls are not allowed to participate.
Also think of the liability the school assumes having even an adult, let alone a minor participating in practice that is not part of the team. Any one practicing or helping the team has to be approved by the school or board too.
Open gyms are different. 7[SUP]th[/SUP] and 8[SUP]th[/SUP] graders are allowed to attend open gym, if approved by the school.

The HS team is club? I think that's the one that matters.

I don't think club teams matter at all as far as any rules if the school has no part of it? Example is we do not have middle school ball at all and the teams our club team plays are in the same boat. Our club team is sponsered by private business's and coached by volunteer parent's. So if there is Fredericktown club vs Utica club it should not matter if one practices with travel teams or even helping out high school correct?

Not allowed. Again no matter how its phrased no matter how the younger girls are involved, they can not compete, participate, or practice with the high school team.
Also adults that help at practice are subject to the same ohssa rules as the hs coaches, paid or volunteer. They would also have to meet the ohsaa requirements to coach hs athletics. Additionally they (parents) would then be restricted during the summer too.

Varsity HC told my youngest DD not to even help go after over thrown balls when she is watching practice do to OHSAA. He does not want to lose her eligibility when she's a freshman. When she watches practice, I'm there watching her for I know she'll try and attempt to do something.
