Just in case anybody on here is a doctor or nurse,I have a quick question. How long til a broken bone in a toe to heal? Daughter breaks her toe cleaning her room last night and went to the ER to get x-rayed and all that fun stuff.
One doc said no sports for 5 to 7 weeks. The next doc that came in after he left (shift change) said she could play within two weeks no problem.

Um...............big difference there. She is wearing a walking boot right now, for at least 5 to 7 days. Just dont know which doctor is more on with his views.
The 2nd doc that said she could play within two weeks (of course some pain and discomfort involved) said that doc #1 was crazy!

So the difference is she wont miss any ball or her season is now over...............

If anybody on here is a doctor or nurse that would know anything about this, please let me know. Also what would work to make her feel better til it heels 100%.
Daughter told the docs she does not want to miss any tournament or league games at all.

Thanks in advance!!!!!

Howdy! Sorry to hear about ur daughter! I am just a lowly ER RN but as long as it is "just a toe" and not a little higher up in the foot she should be running around again in no time. It will mainly be dictated by her discomfort as it heals pretty quickly. You could try "buddy tapeing it" to the next toe...and wearing hard soul shoes...that way she would be protected and minimize movement which will decrease her pain, also take ibuprofen before the start of the game and ice inbetween.
That should do the trick!
Good luck! And hope it works out for her!

you could take the Ronnie Lott approach....just remove the issue!

Good luck and what terrible timing :-(

Depends on which toe? We had a girl play half of last year with a broken little toe. She just ****ed it up. She is a gymnast though, so used to playing in pain.

The two different opinion is not surprising, my daughter got bit by a friends dog two years ago, on her arm, and one doctor told us no playing until the stitches came out, another said go ahead and play that night?

Find a doctor that specializes in sports medicine to get the right answer is my opinion. I wouldn't risk your daughter's health or future on input from anyone on here, even if they did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night...............

My brother played baseball and did the same thing with his toe. He was off for about 2 weeks, taped the toe to the next one, and was fine. He said the pain was minimal. 5-7 weeks sounds pretty extreme for a broken toe.

LEH, Not a Dr. but my dd has broken her Big toe twice in the last 9 months. You need to be extra careful and validate the following...

- Is the break in our around a growth plate? If so, No messing around see a specialist
- Is the toe / bone structure out of alignment? If so, it needs to be reset and taped to other toe to protect it and boot be worn at ALL times.. possibly even when sleeping.

- If no growth plate issue and no alignment issues, taping to other toe and a couple of Ibuprofen's should get here through the season, but give her a week or two to heal.

AGAIN, I AM NOT A DR. BUT Have learned a ton from Wellington Ortho here in town , as we seem to live there the last year.

I talked with a family friend, whom is a nurse and she said herself that the 5 plus weeks is way extreme. I think she will be able to go very soon. She is still telling us "I wont miss any games". She is tougher than this old wimpy man! :D

We will take it one day at a time and see how it goes. Funny how she can play ball and not get hurt, but gets hurt cleaning her room!!!!!! ~sigh~
She actually did it by not wearing any shoes (that comes from the hillbilly side of her family) while cleaning and she ran her foot right into the strong wooden pole that makes up her bunk beds.

She is walking around now with that walking boot on without much of a limp. It was her 2nd to last small toe on her right foot.

I'm no Dr. but I did stay @ a Holiday Inn Express :)

Seriously, I run MANY miles a year and I have had my share of foot injuries. Mostly stress fractures but there isn't much difference between the two. Like others have said, it really depends on the location. If it's where the toes bends - she may have some pain issues. The most hindering part of a broken toe is the swelling and bruising.
I would recommend icing the foot 3-4 times a day to get rid of the inflammation and take NSAID (advil) about 2-3 times a day. In a day or two, try taping the toe to a rigid status and place on a comfortable cleat. The shoes are quite possibly the most important part. If she can find a pair that doesn't put stress on the area - she will be okay.
Now if you get past all of this and she wants to play then that's really up to you. What you have to realize is......if she continues to play while the bone is broken - it won't heel. The only thing that will heel a fracture or broken bone is rest.
But I say what the heck......you have 9 more for a reason :)

Good Luck to the young lady.

Oh no..............................

Got a 2 calls early this afternoon from her doctor and the radiologist and they both have referred us to a bone specialist right away. There is a concern about the foot now, from her broken toe. THIS CANT BE GOOD! Even our daughter has complained about pain shooting thru there. I want to take Coops advice and just rub dirt on it, LOL!
We have a 9am appointment tomorrow to see what is up. We are crossing our fingers and yep......toes!!!!

My DD broke her little toe a few years ago and we let it heal on its own. However, now 3 years later it sticks way off to the side of her foot instead of being straight. SO lesson learned, actually go to the Dr. don't just call one:)

BAD NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

She is out of action for atleast 5 weeks. She has another broken bone in her toe and it happens to be the main one they are worried about. The Orthopedic Surgeon showed us that she broke the front and end part of the toe. There is 3 bones in each toe and some how she broke the front and end but not the middle one.
Not allowed to wear any shoes of any kind except the walking boot she is currently wearing.

So at the earliest would be the beginging of July. Looks like this season will be a wash! Time to start looking foward to the 2010 season.
