Is this a rule or is it a unwritten rule?

Is this a rule or is it a unwritten rule. A friend of mine ask me if a senior is on JV do you invite her for senior night? I was always told seniors could not play on JV that they either make the varsity or are cut. Does anybody know?

We also have a senior playing JV. She pitches for them because she would never play Varsity but at least throws strikes. If the JV aren't playing, she comes up and is on the Varsity roster. We have Senior night this Tuesday and she will be on ?the Varsity roster that game and will be recognized with the other seniors.

Fairly certain there is a written rule that if you are a senior you must play varsity or be cut. Not sure about being a senior making varisty and pitching down. Bretman could answer that. But I know I did see a rule that they must play Varsity if a senior.

I don't recall any rule saying a senior must play Varsity. I'd have to look to be sure, though.

I believe that these things are per the school athletic department. When i was in high school, seniors had to be on Varsity, no cuts and no JV. Where I coach now, Seniors are either on Varsity or are cut. I wouldnt have a heart to cut a senior OR put them on JV. They can be on Varsity and accept their role or walk away. We've had a little bit of both.

No rule about Seniors having to play Varsity in the OHSAA bylaws, and have never read it anywhere else, so Seniors could play down on JV. The only rules that would govern this would be each schools own athletic rules or policy, on how to handle this situation. I know that at our school it has nothing written anywhere, one way or the other, so Seniors could be put on JV squads.
If the kid just wanted to play, I see no problem with it, but most would not play, or their parents wouldn't allow it, because of stigma of "playing down."

I had to go back and read posts that were written and in fact found the post where someone stated that seniors had to make varsity or be cut.....of course there was no rule number posted so it very well could have been an off handed statement....would like to know for sure though.
Just my opinion but if by one's Senior year you don't make Varsity it would seem someone was tryng to tell you something........and would probably find something else to do. So far I have not seen any Seniors playing JV ball.....have seen quite a few #2 pitchers come down from Varsity to get game work in but none were seniors.

Not sure if this is exactly on topic, but here goes.

My son, after three years of competing at a national level in another club sport, decides he wants to play football his senior year. ?He was never big enough to play ball at a younger age.

He goes through all the conditioning, puts in his time, and basically plays speciality teams (kickoff) and at the end of blowouts (we had plenty, our team was 1-9) as a senior.

IMHO, the coach could have cleared the bench much earlier, but that is another story.

Initially, he thought that he could start - every game - as a JV player on Saturday mornings, and still do his special teams gig on the varsity. ?Lots of play, and a letter. ?It would have been better for everyone, except for the "maybe" situation of developing the younger players on the JV. But he didn't play JV. He dressed varsity, and played a few plays a game.

I think he would have been happier playing, and not just lettering.

At my daughter school, ALL seniors (10 of them) play, or make, varsity. Once on varsity if they want playing time, they were offered to play down to JV if they wanted playing time. As you would guess, seniors chose not to play down. They'd rather not play and stay on varsity than to quit the team or play down to JV.

There is no rule which states a senior must play varsity. ?Some HS do put this in their own criteria for selecting players, but this is not being dictated by any governing body (OHSAA). ?

I'm guessing schools that create this rule do so to eliminate biases towards the notion that grade level=playing time, rather than skill level=playing time

Now on senior night do you bring her up and start her and go thru all the senior stuff? I say yes she still part of the sport and is part of the school.

football is a much different animal. Would be senseless to start a senior when a freshman or sophomore could fill the spot. Football allows for 25 or so different kids at each level to get playing time. So ideally 75 kids get game experience to make a program grow.

A senior pitching on JV because no one is left to pitch strikes makes total sense. As long as she isn't down there sand-bagging and blowing pitches by 9th and 10th graders, ... why not? who wants yet another JV walk-a-thon?
