BIG STONE GAP — Union took advantage of almost every opportunity it had Monday to pick up a nondistrict softball win. The Lady Bears (11-2) had only three hits, but they made the most of 11 walks, two hit batters and four Rye Cove errors to take a 10-0 victory over the Lady Eagles. The game, which endured a lightning delay of more than an hour, was called after 4½ innings because of the 10-run rule. Union’s Zoe Brooks recorded the complete-game win on the mound. Brooks gave up two hits, struck out one and walked none. Union scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning after the first four batters in the order drew walks. The Lady Bears added three hits in the opening frame. Rye Cove (11-7), which used three pitchers, kept Union hitless the rest of the way. But walks, errors and a couple of sacrifice flies allowed the Lady Bears to score twice more in the second and three more times in the third. Kayley Neece, Brooks and Micah Elkins each had a hit for the Lady Bears. Union got RBIs from Elkins, Brooke Light, Emilee Mullins and Jenna Wade. Abby Vicars and Kennedy Taylor each had a hit for the Lady Eagles. The game marked the first of Union’s five scheduled games in the final week of the regular season, a string that includes four straight Mountain 7 District contests. Rye Cove has two key Cumberland District contests — against Twin Springs and Eastside — with the league’s regular-season championship on the line. The Lady Eagles hold a one-game lead on both the Lady Titans and Lady Spartans heading into this week’s play.
