CLINTWOOD — In Mountain 7 District softball, teams have to be more than ready to play every game. They have to be ready to play every inning. Ridgeview (10-3, 7-2) scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a 5-4 district win over Union and keep a share of the Mountain 7 lead. “That was a heck of a softball game. Either way that game would have ended, that was a heck of a softball game right there,” said Ridgeview coach Kent Grant. “That’s pretty much what this conference is. You’ve got to be ready to play seven innings.” The Wolfpack led 2-0 after five innings, but Union battled back. The Lady Bears (12-3, 5-3) cut the lead to one run when Marleigh Duncan scored on a fielder’s choice on a ground ball from Zoe Brooks. Union, which had 12 hits in the game, had four hits to score three runs in the top of the seventh. A one-out, two-RBI single from Duncan scored Emili Brooks and Brooke Light and gave Union its first lead of the game. Union went ahead 4-2 when Duncan scored on a single from Jenna Wade. Ridgeview loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh when Hunter Grant reached base on a fielder’s choice, Bailey Frazier reached on a fielding error and L.J. Swiney reached on a fielder’s choice. Grant then scored from third on a walk to Carissa Mullins. Ridgeview’s Peyton Mullins then sent a screaming shot in the infield that was misplayed, allowing Frazier to score the tying run. A Union throwing error on the same play allowed Swiney to score from third and give Ridgeview the win in a thriller. “Every single night it’s like this. It’s fun but it’s a little stressful,” said Grant. The loss was a disappointment with the double error for Union coach Mike Rhodes. “Too many mental mistakes. When you’re playing a team like Ridgeview, you can’t make mistakes like that,” said Rhodes. “I was proud of our girls. They fought hard and never gave up. Just a couple of mistakes.” The Lady Bears are still in the hunt for the Mountain 7 title, just a game behind Ridgeview and John Battle in the loss column. For Union, the challenge does not get any easier. The Lady Bears play Battle Thursday in another key district contest.
