COEBURN — Twin Springs coach Tim Lawson wasn’t sure the last time the Lady Titans won a Cumberland District softball title. It doesn’t matter anymore. He knows when they won their most recent title. “This is my second year and I’m not up on the history. I’ve heard 2007, but there’s some dispute about that,” Lawson said after his team defeated regular-season champion Eastside 3-0 on Monday in the district tournament’s championship game. Though not too concerned about the program’s history, Lawson was nevertheless thrilled about the Lady Titans’ present and future after they knocked off the Lady Spartans, who have dominated the district since its formation seven years ago. “This is huge. Absolutely huge. No seniors, four juniors, three sophomores, four freshmen. It’s huge,” he said. “We’ve gone from next to last to next to first and they’ve worked for it. “I told them at the beginning of the year they were 60 percent good and 40 percent lucky. Their challenge was to get to 80 percent good and 20 percent lucky, and I think they’ve made it.” Some of that good for Twin Springs (15-7) was on the mound with Aubrey Powers. The sophomore picked up her 12th win of the season, scattering six hits with six strikeouts and one walk. “We just came in feeling like we could do it,” Powers said. Powers (12-7) got plenty of offensive support with eight hits, including a two-RBI single from freshman Emaleigh Powers in the sixth inning that sealed the win. The Twin Springs defense played the game without committing an error. Defense is the strong suit for the Lady Titans, Lawson said. “(Powers) is throwing it harder than she’s thrown it all year, we’re catching it better than we’ve caught it all year and hitting it better than we’ve hit all year. We’re feeling good,” Lawson said. Eastside (15-6) loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the sixth, but the Lady Titans came up with two big plays to end the inning and the scoring threat. “I think we cover about as good as anybody in the conference,” Lawson said. “If we can hit it, we can beat them. That’s the key to our success. “If we hit it, we win. If we don’t, we don’t.” Despite the loss, Eastside still owns the Cumberland’s No.1 seed in the Region 1D tournament by virtue of winning the regular-season district title. The Lady Spartans open regional quarterfinal play Friday at home against the winner of Wednesday’s first-round game between Holston and Council. Twin Springs, the district’s No. 2 seed, travels to Hogoheegee District regular-season champion Chilhowie on Friday for their Region 1D quarterfinal. RYE COVE CLINCHES THIRD Rye Cove (13-10) earned the district’s third and final seed Monday with a 10-0 win over J.I. Burton in the tournament’s consolation game. The Lady Eagles scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth to end the game an inning early. Haley Byington led the Rye Cove effort by tossing a three-hit shutout on the mound and going 4-for-4 at the plate with four RBIs and two runs scored. Rye Cove travels to Black Diamond District champion Grundy on Friday in the Region 1D quarterfinals.
