Lasers tourney observations

Balls? Maybe it was coincidence but it seemed to me that the balls were soft Friday and Sat but Sunday they were flying. Did they use the same balls? Or I wonder if balls vary from one case to another? Just curious if anyone else noticed this?

We played in the 16U at Civic and Huber. Great field crews, clean bathrooms, well posted, updated brackets, no entry fees. Thanks for having us Lasers.

We were at the 14u fields and I have to agree with cgs, I thought they did a great job. With a tournament that size, if concessions and full porto-pots are the worst complaint than they did awesome. And no, I'm not with the Lasers. :) Just a tid bit of info...tics DO NOT fly. As annoying as those little black bugs were, they had wings and were flying around...they were not tics. I thought the competition was great, the fields had fencing and were lined in between games, and the umpires were umpires...some were good and some were not so good. I loved playing all the extra games. We've won a few tournaments this year and we've never left the park as exhausted as that, we definately got our money's worth!!! With that many teams and games, I was amazed at how organized they were. The games were on time and the brackets were updated. Great job Lasers!!

What impressed me the most was the level of talent and play I saw at all the games. Fantastic job ladies!! I saw some truely incredible plays and some great hits all weekend long. All that hard work definately shows!!!

Someone mentioned the depth of the temp fences. Anybody know where they were set? They LOOKED ok to me, but I didn't bother to step them off. I do know we put close to 10 balls close to the fence, but not one over, the whole weekend at Civic and Huber. I just assumed we needed more Wheaties.

I was dubious of the Sunday games, but once we started playing it was great.. the rain hit GMS right before our game w/ the OFC Heat and once it cleared my coaches and I jumped in with a rake and cleared the water, threw around diamond dry and we were playing in 30 minutes... then went over to Kennedy - that was a scheduling cluster due to rain and teams bailing (btw: when I got there I had several other org parents come up saying they were glad we came, they had heard we bailed out on Sunday .. not the case -we played up until 5pm at Kennedy) - I do have to apologize for our other 14u team, the coach had no idea about the Sunday game deal and sent his team home. He left me a vm in a panic about it but it was too late on Sunday to get the girls back.

Umpiring was what is was... some real good, some real bad... Lasers Gray did their usual awesome job on the fields, that is one great set of parents and kids. Loved to competition, on Sat our pitching gave up 4 total runs in 21 innings, and we went 1-2 ..lol.. that was new...

We heard same thing at the Metro.. I think it is related to weather/humidity .. has to be...

Bouncing around in the back of my head all morning was the question of how many runs we had scored against us in the tourney. Your post triggered me to go out to the car and pull the book. Over 10 games we gave up 18 runs and we were at .500 for the tourney. Four of our 5 losses were by 1 run. We lost two ITB games 1-0 each game. Some crazy defense being played last weekend.

I hear ya! Sat we scored 4 runs (3 of those in one inning) in 22 hitting innings ourselves... we totally lost our bats... great learning exp for the girls. We play in an 18u dbl-header league on weds nights, we faced several college freshman pitchers last Wed, hit great .. but at 43 feet.. we seemed behind the ball and late up until Sunday at 40... who knows.. ;)

Doug, I might have been umpiring one of your games. Sunday at JFK Park, field #10, Hawks vs. Explosion(?), sometime around 3:00-ish. I know that the second baseman had "Lenos" on the back of her jersey.

Yes! Oh man, wish you had grabbed me and intro'd... wasn't she a great player? LOL!!!!! When we decided to get names on the jerseys she told me she better not get any grief now that she can't hide from being the coaches DD.... I told her, I can't hide from playing daddy ball so fair is fair...

Did you do bases or plate? either way the game was called on both sides very well... first time we every played on a baseball mound, I thought the pitchers did very well considering...

Ok, got a question.. had a run down between 2nd 3rd.. runner moving back to second, turns and heads to 3rd, goes a little wide, not much, she goes about 15 ft from the bag, umpire is just outside her, ball goes to third, she sees umpire, player with ball and goes back to 2nd, throw to 2nd, runner out. Umpires talk and call 'umpire interference' - runner safe at third. He said she turned around due to him being close to or in her way... maybe, may be not.. either way, I honestly never heard of umpire interference... when does that come into play?

Unless advancing age has deprived me of the memory, I'm pretty sure I've never heard of umpire interference either.

And of course next batter, bomb to fence.. we lose by 1 run... lol, always happens that way. I did not want to bring it up for fear UI was legit (I still don't know if it is) and I would look stupid... i thought the ump was part of the playing field, etc..

No such thing, they are a part of the field. Had a DD bounce right off of one who was in the baseline one time when she turned and ran he was standing right there, her whole 110 lbs bounced off his 230 like a rubber ball....

Had one Sunday at 12u. Pitch comes in and it either bounces off the plate or went through our catchers glove(don't remember which) but the ball ends up stuck under the umpires facemask. Umpire is just standing there with the ball stuck. Anyhow, runner on first goes to steal of course. Our catcher turns around to find the ball under the ump's facemask. She just grabs the ball out of his mask and throws a laser to second. runner was safe by less than a step. It was a reaaly wierd/funny/good play.

Umpire Interference is when a batted ball strikes an umpire or they hinder the catcher trying to throw out a runner. Seems like this would be umpire obstruction and there's no such thing in the ASA rule book. It is conceivable an umpire could make this decision, under the broad powers of Rule 10, if they caused the obstruction by being in a bad position.

Doug,

My daughters play on the Explosive team that played you at JFK field 9, after the long controversial delay.

The team had made the decision to return to Cleveland when they bumped our game from field 7. I am glad we had enough players stay and play the game. You have a nice team. Your right fielder (Cummings?) great arm!

Good Luck this season!

Bretman ... no complaints from the right field foul line seats.

That's a rare one!

Should have been an immediate dead ball. The umpire may then place runners on whichever base he judges they would have reached had the ball not become stuck in his equipment.

If the runner was stealing on the pitch, that would probably be second base- treat is as a wild pitch/passed ball.

If she only took off after a delay, after seeing the ball was stuck, probably keep her on first.

Fences at Civic and Huber were set by the same crew and I believe it was 200'.
The wind was playing with a lot of hard hit balls. High fly balls didn't stand a chance.
