Leg pain

My dd start complaining about lower leg pain yesterday. She is a freshman and is wearing metal cleats for the first time. Is it possible that they may be the cause of her pain. Has anyone else's daughters complain of lower leg pain after wearing metal cleats for the first time. This is after 11 games in two weeks. Also she is been a catcher for several years but has been put in the roll of playing where she can best help the team, left field, center field, 3rd, ss, 2nd and still occasionally catcher and has played every inning of every game all of which might have contributed to the pain. And any suggestions would be helpful. She doesn't have another game for a week and I told her she needed to wear her rubber cleats for practice this week.

She thinks they are shin splints but after the game the trainer gave her an ice bag and she was holding it slightly to the inside (from a top view, if her shin was 12 o'clock she was holding it around 10-11 o'clock) of her leg just below her calf.

I would say shin splints is the cause. Shin splints cause dull, aching pain in the front of the lower leg. Its pretty common. Its actually more than likely a sprained muscle. Is she flat footed by chance? When I played sports in high school and especially track I got them all the time because I am very flat footed. Usually some advil would make it go away. Maybe try some arch supports for her cleats, but in my case arch supports would help my legs but hurt my feet.

Thanks for the advice. Gave me an idea, not sure how good it is but it is an idea. Any one ever use the Dr. Scholl's custom fit inserts where you go to walmart and stand on the machine and it tells you which ones to buy. Maybe that would help. Was also thinking about the compression sleeves that go from your ankles to knees. Just a couple of thoughts, anyone with any experience or opinions about either?

My daughter had problems about 3 years ago, not sure if it was the feet, legs, or back. but we got the dr.shcolls inserts and those complaints went away. She puts them in both cleats and regular shoes. I will have to ask my wife she remembers everything. LOL

if you are sure its not a stress fracture or something of that nature, my doc suggested Capaizan roll on at site of the pain. do not apply any heat to the area after using it. this was after spending 10-12 hours day standing on cement floors.

My college roommate had shin splints and wore the compression sleeves all the time. She was red-shirted the first year so she could have surgery to correct it. I don't know if she had an extreme case or not but she was in constant pain until it was fixed.

Went to WalMart last night and had her stand on the Dr. Scholl's machine and it said she had lower arches. So I went to get her the suggested inserts until I looked and seen they were $50. Living paycheck to paycheck and it being Wednesday evening they will have to wait till Friday. Never thought they would be that expensive. Live and learn.

Oh ya, they are expensive for little inserts. You can almost buy another pair of shoes for the cost, it's rediculous!!! But they do work, my brother swears by them.

Did you ever consider "growing pains"?

It sounds like she's at the age where she's going into her last growth spurt before calling it quits in the height department. Sometimes this sudden increase in height causes body parts to ache until everything self-adjusts. My daughter had similar conditions - that eventually went away.

My 2 cents worth.

That is a good thought and no I did not consider it only because two years ago she got a severe ankle sprain playing ****** and the x-ray showed that her growth plates were almost closed then. Honestly I hope this is the problem. She's only around 5'2" would be nice if she could put on another 3-4". Here's hoping.

We always advise to be cautious but most teenage girls will go thru the pains of growth spurts that are challenging to say the least. Shin splints are not uncommon during this time. Both can produce similar pains making it difficult to diagnose. There's no question that either hurt. It really comes down to the individual and how they handle it.

Try putting a foam pad just under her heel inside cleats. Ice will help with pain after practice/games.

She had problems with her heals everytime she played ball, she would be gimping around the field. Yes they are expensive! But it fixed her problem.
