Limited time with tournaments fast approaching

Looking for some advice to help a group of 12U mesh. We just finished our "regular season", and are starting to compile an all star team. I"m new to OFC and have noticed that there are alot of post from what appears to be travel teams. Our organization is purely rec and we take the best 12 in our youth league to local tourneys to get them some more field time. We only have 2 weeks until the first show and Im interested in what people think would be the best way to transition these girls from opposing teams to playing as a team in about 10 practices.

I would recommend a team bonding activity for sure in this case. Travel teams at the high school level are in the same type of boat, playing against each other during the high school season. Most teams do some sort of team bonding. Cook-out, Movies, bowling whatever you and your parents can come up with. The 10 practices will surely help in the team building area, but maybe an activity outside of softball would be a good way to get things rolling.

I appreciate the help! We have made a couple of trips to the local DQ after practice so the girls can bond a little. Seems to be helpful. Outside activities are a no brainer to help them mesh, I guess I am also wanting to know what people think are the key elements to work in practices to assure that they also work as a team on the field. Thanks again.

Be sure to get them on the same page for bunt coverage, steal coverage, and backup positioning.

You are going to have your hands full. Since you have an allstar team you probably have 8 SS, a couple first baseman and alot of pitchers. I'm sure all of them are used to batting in the 1,2,3 and 4 hole. And a handful of parents all with a magnifying glass on you. Ah it's not for the faint of heart. Be honest and upfront with everyone, including the parent that calls you at 10 p.m. the night befor a tournement. If you do this, things will go alot smoother from the start. Are you looking to win or have everyone get equal playing time. Once you awnser this, your halfway home.

Before addressing the girls, address the parents. They maybe your biggest hurdle to over come on the mental side. They all think thier kids should play travel ball anyway, so explain to them that positions need covered and in allstarts you play to win.

I appreciate all the good ideas. You are right, I do have my hands full. The kids are responding well to my teamwork drills and overall "new environment" of the merge. So far I have only heard a parent or two question how we are doing things. This is nothing new, you will always have that. Thanks again!
