~ Loyalty to returning Players~

fastpitchersMom, So are you saying if a young lady comes to tryout for your dd's spot and she's lets just say a little better then your dd she should get your dd's spot? No matter how long your dd has been with that team?

Not trying to be smart but I do think returning players should get the benefit of the doubt in a case like that.

If a player was obviously (not negligibly) better than my daughter, then that player deserves my daughter's spot. What is the incentive to become better every year if there is a guarantee? I understand what you are saying, Macsmom but I just feel that it means more to my daughter and makes her a better player if she has to earn her spot each year.

Fastpitchersmom,

I do see your point, believe me my dd has never been handed anything when it has come to this sport. She has had to bust her rear and leave a team she loved, to get the playing time she needed to progress. I too want her to walk on the field every game, every practice knowing that she has to earn that spot and that its not a given. She is in fact becoming a better ball player because of those things.

Last night, I asked my daughter and her teammate which scenario they would choose:

1) As a previous player on a team, they are guaranteed a spot for the following year.
2) Must try out each year regardless of status. They don't make the team this year due to better players trying out.

They both yelled number 2. Neither one wants a free ride. They would lose some self-respect if they received a giveme.

My dd told me that even if she were guaranteed a spot, she would want to tryout anyway. She loves the practice and being on the field. Plus, she is very competitive and wants to beat out the next girl!! LOL :lmao:
