McMurray hits milestone in Gate City's win over Union

GATE CITY — Callie McMurray reached a major milestone on Friday. Gate City’s senior forward recorded her 100th goal on an assist from Jamie Watts in the Lady Blue Devils’ 3-0 Mountain District soccer victory over Union. McMurray, who tallied two goals against the Lady Bears, became just the third Lady Blue Devils player to reach the century mark — joining Anna McClung and Megan Edwards in this exclusive club — and the fifth overall for Gate City soccer. Caleb Herron and Neth Gardner reached the mark with the boys’ program. Ashley Carter assisted on McMurray’s second goal, her 27th of the season. Watts netted the other goal for Gate City (9-1), which had goalkeepers Madison Grizzle and Katelynn Parton combine for the shutout. Keeper Lexi McCray had 18 saves for the Lady Bears, who were outshot 24-4. BOYS SOCCER GATE CITY 2, UNION 2 GATE CITY — After battling for a stalemate in the first half and then falling behind by a goal, the Blue Devils scored two goals before Union forced extra time. David Edwards and Austin Gamble had the goals for Gate City. BASEBALL UNION 8, GATE CITY 1 GATE CITY — Bailey Gibson launched a three-run home run in the top of the second inning, Braxton Zirkle belted a two-run shot in the sixth and the Bears ran off with the Mountain 7 District road win. Adam Cox struck out a whopping 14 batters in 6 2/3 three-hit innings in earning the win for the Bears (9-7, 4-4). Cox walked two and the only run he allowed was Jon Compton’s solo homer in the bottom of the third. Cam Bartee got the game’s final out via strikeout. Zirkle finished 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Gibson was 2-for-4 with the three runs batted in and he scored once. Landon Turner and Jake Taylor had the other hits for Gate City (4-10, 2-6). Tyler Hamm took the loss after allowing four runs on four hits, walking two and striking out six in five innings of work. EASTSIDE 17, J.I. BURTON 0 COEBURN — Adam Ketron went 3-for-4 with an inside-the-park home run and six RBIs and the Spartans dispatched the Raiders in the Cumberland District tile. Drew Richards was 3-for-3 with a triple and was the winning pitcher, throwing eight strikeouts in a two-hit shutout. Dakota Moore had two hits, including a double, and Cole Harness also finished with two hits. RYE COVE 5, TWIN SPRINGS 4 CLINCHPORT — The Eagles outhit their Scott County rivals 10-7 and overcame seven errors to eke out the Cumberland victory. Payton Qualls went 2-for-2 and drove in three runs for Rye Cove (10-7, 5-5), and Jacob Dishner, Brian Pearcy and Tyler Starnes each finished 2-for-4. Holton Carter, who came on in relief of Dishner in the fifth, earned the win after striking out six and allowing one hit with no walks in his three innings. Justin Reed was 2-for-3 and Zach Lane and Dylan Austin drove in a run apiece for Twin Springs (9-7, 4-5). Tanner Dingus took the loss. JOHN BATTLE 11, WISE CENTRAL 6 WISE — Jake Mumpower and Bryce Bowman each had 3-for-5 efforts in the Trojans’ Mountain 7 win. Landon Moore recorded a dozen strikeouts and Jarret Pool had two hits for John Battle. JP Stallard and Tyler Muncy each collected two hits for Central, which saw Evan Stanley drive in two runs. Zack James suffered the loss. ABINGDON 26, RIDGEVIEW 0 CLINTWOOD — Thomas Francisco hit a grand slam and another two-run home run to lead the Falcons to the Mountain 7 victory over the Wolfpack. Tanner Barrs knocked around four hits, and Cade Hungate and Dalton Chapman each had three. SOFTBALL CASTLEWOOD 17, T. WALKER 6, 6 INNINGS CASTLEWOOD — Gracie Hicks rapped out three hits and pitched six innings, striking out 10, to lead the Lady Blue Devils to the Cumberland District win over the Lady Pioneers. Castlewood totaled 13 hits and Thomas Walker had nine, but the Lady Pioneers hurt themselves with nine errors.
