Bartlesville, Okla. – The No. 18-ranked Oklahoma Wesleyan University Eagles jumped on top big early and went on to a 98-60 win tonight (Feb. 27) in the KCAC Tournament quarterfinals in Bartlesville, Okla.
The Eagles set the tone early, scoring the first 13 points of the game during the first five minutes.
Threes by Tate Vang (JR/Wichita, Kan. ), Davonte Pack (JR/Sumter, SC) and Jun Murdock (FR/Wichita, Kan. ) helped the Falcons claw within 23-15, but seven points from Valentin Van Putten sparked an 11-3 run to double the lead up to 16 at 34-18 with 4:17 left in the first half.
After two more treys from Murdock shaved the deficit to 10, 12 straight points from the Eagles ballooned the lead up to 46-24. Jarrett Murphy (JR/Huntsville, Ala. ) then hit a late three to make it 46-27 at the break.
The Falcons got as close as 14 twice in the second half, but on the last occasion the Eagles closed the door when consecutive threes by Brooks Haddock capped a 23-4 burst that created a 31-point lead of 81-50 with 8:11 left.
Murdock, the KCAC Freshman of the Year, led the Falcons with 21 points, including a career-high tying 5-of-7 from three-point distance.
Pack added 14 points while James Conley (SR/Derby, Kan. ), playing in his final game in a Falcon uniform, led the team with seven rebounds. The Derby, Kan. Native finished just 22 points shy of 1,000 during his two-year career at Friends.
Haddock paced the Eagles (23-8) with 21 points, with Taylen Miller scoring 14. Brandon Bird added 12 and Van Putten chipped in with 10. Kaleb Stokes pulled down a game-high nine boards for the Eagles, who will host Bethel College in the KCAC semifinals Saturday night (Feb. 29). Bethel upset second-seeded Southwestern College earlier tonight.
The Falcons, under 17th year head coach Dale Faber, wrap up the season at 17-13 overall and were 15-9 in the KCAC.
