I heard on the radio today that the state of Ohio is considering an annual mileage tax on vehicles to help raise revenue. Wouldn't that be a kick in the you know whats for travel ball families if they passed it?

they already have a mileage tax in place -- the tax you pay on gasoline whenever you fill up your beater to drive to the games -- the more you drive, the more gas you buy, the more tax mony you pump in

If they really want to increase revenue they should create jobs for the thousands of people recently unemployed by DHL, Delphi, GM and others.

I agree create jobs, not more taxes. I was getting a laugh last night that NY is going to put a tax on soft drinks to raise money for Health care. What' next.

Since people are driving less these days or they are buying vehicles that get better mileage, gas consumption is down. They tax now by the gallon sold. If they tax per mile driven, revenue goes up!

To generate revenue it is easier for the state law makers to enact mileage tax. This can be done with a stroke of the pen.

To creates jobs in this state would require a stroke of genius.....something that is saddly lacking in our state government.

I wonder if this new tax would apply to the Amtrax as well?

I guess at least two other states do this type of taxation. Oregon, the retirement state of the counterculture generation is the one model Ohio is studying. But Oregon's reasoning for the tax is a little different than ours. You're just not a friend of the enviroment if you drive a lot leaving your big old carbon footprint on our nice clean earth so you should be punished, oops, I mean taxed for your inconsideration to dear old mother earth.

Yes, they put a reader on odometers to track the mileage. After this, the next thing they will do is regulate how many miles you can drive in a given week or month or year. Of course, certain people will be exempt, as they will be deemed "too important", but I'm telling you this is coming if we keep electing "environmentally friendly" politicians.

A mileage tax is yet another way for government to choose winners and losers in society. And hence, grant themselves more power over the citizenry.

Since Joe now lives in the eco-conscious region of our country it would be wise to heed his warnings. For myself, since I still drive a car with a mechanical odometer it would be time to jam a toothpick in the gears.

Just think of all the odometer readers the government will have to hire now. I would say 4 or 5 for every county at a nice fat annual salary of 100k. Just think of all the croonies they could repay by giving them nice easy odometer reading jobs with benefits.

Seems a mileage tax is a consumption tax like the flat tax people have talked about proposing.
Isn't it funny how Dems are so ready to enact this, but are really opposed to a flat tax.

As if $4.00 a gallon gas wasn't bad enough last summer, I just love how when a politician comes up with "solutions" there's always somebody who pays the price of their "public service". I estimate I drove 20,000+ miles last year for tournaments and practice alone not including my everyday driving so I hate to guess what such a tax would do to me. I also would be very skeptical that Ohio would remove tax on gas and rely solely on mileage because of all the revenue they would lose on gas tax from all the vehicles from out of state who get gas traveling through Ohio.

Oh come on! Let's try to think about this on their (Politicians) level.

I'm Thinking ? ? ? ? If we raise the price of Fuel, this will help Americians to Conserve Fuel. And we will require cars to be more Fuel Efficient, this will help conserve Fuel also. But wait! Less Fuel Consumption means less Tax Revenue for us (Politicians). Boy's we've gotta come up with something here. Mileage Tax!

I'm still Thinking ? ? ? ? Oh if we ban Smoking in Ohio (I'm not suggesting that Smoking is Good!) This will help all those Health Conscience People, and will help assist in closing those dirty old Bowling Alley's, Bar's and Restaurants in Ohio, That's a good thing Right?. Oh Man! Again Loss Tax Revenue.

Wait! I'm still Thinking ? ? ? ? Yeah let's vote out Gambling Casino's in Ohio. We can't have anything that might boost the Job Employment, Ohio's Economy, in this State. We can't have that!

Hold On, I'm still Thinking ? ? ? ? Them darn Pay Day Lenders they've gotta Go! Who needs them anyway, Their Business Closing's and Job Losses don't mean that much, Now do they?

Are you kidding Me! Create Jobs? You've gotta be out of your Mind!

Welcome to the Great State of NOHIO! Where it really is hard to tell the difference between an Idiot and an Intellect!;&

FASTPITCH! Anything else, And you're playing to SLOW!

I was just thinking, they can raise all the taxes they want to. Even the Feds can raise a few. Ohio, the Feds, the Citys, and even the Countys can all invent new taxes and raise them to really high rates..............But if no one is working, the people have no Money....And our Governments will still be looking to raise revnues for their huge bugets.

How about they tax the source of where all of the USA dollars are.....CHINA, JAPAN, etc
its sure not the US citizens that are earning the money.

The mileage tax is being investigated as a way of insuring they have enough money to keep up the roads. With more hybrids and electric cars getting into the hands of consumers it kind of makes sense. The problem is going to be verification and privacy. Do you want a little black box installed on your car that tells the government where you go. The trucking industry has been fighting this battle for years. The answer for out of state vehicles is to tax you a set amount every year for every state. Then make you report the actual mileage and fuel consumption for each state you went through during the year and tax you more or less based on that. Think $600.00 dollars to renew your plates every year.

I'll bet there are enough 16-18 year old's flooding the market to offset some of the downward revenue generators that efficiency has given us. Hmm, unless population isn't constantly increasing. Sounds like we should have an audit of state spending while they waste 20 million (guessing) to re-invent what other states have already studied. Send Oregon 10k to get a copy of the report or "Google" it and get it like college students do for their papers...
