Congrats to Delaney! Somehow I'm guessing Delaney doesn't read OFC, though.

That's correct. It would literally be against NCAA rules for a Div. III school to try to have anyone sign any document stating they will be going to that school. Anyone who says they "signed" at a Div. III school is either lying or engaging in wishful thinking.

I have been amazed at how many experienced Washington travel and high school coaches do not know that athletic scholarships and letters of intent do not exist at the NCAA Div. III level.

lol, no problem.

I have three girls who say they are coming here assuming they get accepted. I have about four more who say we are easily their #1 choice (including a stud Gold shortstop), but money will be an issue. Many others are in the application process. If I had been through this once before I would have a feel for things.

Our biggest competition here is actually community colleges. Their teams are at least as good and often better than Div. III. They are much cheaper, but of course the education and college experience are nowhere near the same. But in today's economy, they have become much more attractive. I have already lost a pitcher recruit and a shortstop recruit to community colleges who both wanted to come to Whitworth.

One girl I was recruiting appears to have signed with Dayton. I never thought I was going to get her, but we were at least communicating.

Joe, can you offer any insight into whether or not DIII coaches have any pull as far as a) helping a borderline recruit get accepted, and/or b) helping a recruit get grant money?

Those still looking should consider Concordia University in Ann Arbor, MI. They are NAIA and can offer scholarship $! New coach and only had 3 returners so they have lots of positions to fill!

AnotherSoftballMom:

a) Yes, at least at my school, I can at least pull for a borderline recruit to get accepted. I don't know exactly how much pull I have, but I can weigh in. I don't know how other Div. III schools handle that.

b) No. That is specifically against the rules. It's also pretty frustrating. Coaches can do everything within their power to recruit someone and have that recruit want to attend your school, but then the money part is completely out of our hands and often determinative.

I wonder how many are still negotiating or are waiting to see how things go and are going to sign in the spring instead of the early period?
