New OHSAA By-Law

I emailed OHSAA, asking about our club team, that is not reconized supported in any way by our school.

Mr. Vita:

The OHSAA does not regulate non-school teams, but we do restrict what members of SCHOOL TEAMS can do in terms of non-school teams and/or travel teams. If the 7th and 8th graders on your team are not part of any school sanctioned team, then there are no restrictions on them. I would recommend that you consult with the Glen Este’s athletic administrator.

When you play school teams, your team will need to abide by OHSAA sport regulations for softball (number of endings, no tie break procedures, etc) as you will be playing a member school.

Regards,

Roxanne

I did contact our AD, he said we are fine, no problems with our girls, because we are not a school team.

I will put out there, how I have interpreted this so far and feel free to tell me where I am wrong or right on this issue as it will certainly effect my middle school team and my travel team???

Our league the MSL does not schedule our games and our middle school does not play in a league. There is no MSL tourney for middle school. We simply schedule games against other teams in the same boat as us not necessarily in the MSL. WE fund ouselves and we use players from our school system. The highschool allows us to use their facilties, but they see it as a way to promote their team in the future. Our middle school does not even allow us to use their gym.. So I do not believe we will fall under the new CLUB team status. We called ourselves a Club team last year, but I dont think what our team is. falls under what they they are now defiining CLUB as in OHSA. The terminology is the same, but that is not what we are nor do I think it is what most of the teams we faced were. There were some however, that did fall under the definition of Club team that will now be effected by this..

That has been my interp so far. Does anyone who knows something about it say Im right or wrong??? or close to it?? Or have more questions for me.

Ash: When the first practice is had in Jr. High ball..... that is when the rule begins. That was my understanding.

Crush1: You are reading too much into it. Your team is fine. The OHSAA cannot regulate a non-school team.

When the OHSAA says a "club" team, it means a school-sponsored club team. School-sponsored club teams are teams that the school recognizes and wear the school's name and colors, but are typically not paid for by the school and usually are involved in a sport not sanctioned by the OHSAA.

Ash: You are fine unless the Jr. High team is truly a school team. I would call the Jr. High AD and ask him/her whether this is a board-recognized team. If you are in the SW City Schools, unless they adopted jr. high softball this year, then it's not a school team.

I feel they will just hurt themselves. My opinion is that more girls just may not play High School ball. Recently i had talked to a girl with a softball scholarship and she told me the colleges wanted to see her travel ball stats; they didn't even want to see her High school ones; it didn't matter to them(colleges)

Finch, I have heard the same thing mentoned many times on this forum and while I am sure that the player you talked to was telling you what happened to her it is generally not the case. I have talked with countless college coaches and they do care about high school results. It is for the most part a factor (one of many). When my DD was being recruited it was a huge factor, as was the travel ball stats and what tournaments we competed in.

I think that in general if a player is on a HS team that is a state power, and she is a factor on that team then it will definately have an impact. Other schools have teams that are not very competitive and college coaches may tend to minimize those results. This will always happen. The bottom line is if a player is on a great HS team it will matter to prospective college coaches, if she plays on a below average team that won just a handful of games then obviously her HS career will not be major factor.
