I was a baseball coach for 3+yrs but getting ready to take over my daughter 10 under team. I never played softball, playing little league baseball since my father was my coach. All advise will be appreciated. We're looking into playing travel tournaments in 2020.

My advice is to make coming to this forum a habit. You're going to get some excellent insight into our game from people that have been there and done that.

FYI, my first word of advice is know you cannot coach girls the same as you do boys. Girls are not porcelain dolls but they still need to be handled, taught, and motivated differently. Drill Sargent tactics will not work, especially when they get a lil older (12 and above). The better coaches at all levels of the game are life coaches and have excellent people skills.

Be ready to explain why. Girls need to know why. Boys will do and accept "Because I told you so" as an answer. The example I like to use; take a groups of boys standing around and instruct one of them to go run head-on into a close-by tree. He'll do it. Even if it is for no other reason than to show off for his buddies, he'll run into the tree. Take a bunch of girls standing around and instruct one of them to run head-on into a close-by tree. The first thing you'll get from her is a hand on a hip and a look on her face asking "Why?" Now if you give her a good enough reason, she'll go ahead and run into the tree. If not, you'll open up a debate that may last a life time. Women don't forget. Tell her because you said so and there's a good chance you'll get the "stare." This does not mean they are paying attention. It means they are thinking about how many ways they can kill you without getting thrown in prison.

The above advice is good at all ages..................See you back here soon for more!!!!!!
