"Newbie" lookin' for advice

Not criticism.

Our travel team budget is really tight this year. We would like to get on a great team that fits. Basically a team that thinks it's better to look good on the field because of how you play, not because both of your uniforms are pretty and your bat bags, helmets, warm-up suits and cleats match. Matching t-shirts and a trophy are gorgeous to us.

So here is my question.... Is it a bad idea to "temp" our DD out this summer? We want her to keep up her travel experience without losing her good name. SHE is a very committed player, our bank account just isn't cooperating yet. We haven't really been taking her to tryouts because of it.

We've only "temped" for one tournament and it was for another club team. She had the same uniforms as the other team so we didn't have to buy another set. If you do "temp", how does that work?

I'd love to be able to get her onto a winter team,(I've heard they are affordable), to keep her game up. High school can carry her from there to helping travel teams this summer.

Is this a pipe dream?

Maybe the part about winter teams being affordable is a pipe dream . . .

I can only speak for our team, but we purchase a couple of extra uniforms to use when we need guest players.

Whether she will catch on as an "A" list substitute for teams in need is anybody's guess. I do know that it is the rare team who isn't in the position of needing a guest substitute at some time during the summer.

Best approach is probably to advertise here on OFC and keep bumping the thread to the top throughout the season.

Remember though, usually the temp players are used to fill in the holes. If she has a certain position in mind, she may never see it. The best way to excel at a position is to get as much instruction and experience as you can there. As a guest, you don't get the benefit of practices and instruction-which in my opinion is essential. It seems risky to hope she will find a place to play every weekend. There are a lot of teams out there that offer fundraising to pay your fees. It is a pain in the butt at times, but sometimes it is the only way. My DD is a pretty decent player and is one of the leaders on our team. When she fills in on other teams, she is shy, quiet, and unsure of herself and her abilities. When you play all year with a team you learn so much about teamwork and relying on each other. You not only get the instruction, but the comraderie, the feeling of being a part of a team. I am not against guest players, I think they are wonderful for teams so they don't have to forfeit games. I just don't know if I'd want my DD to be only a guest player without her own team. But when the money is tight, you have to do what you have to do.

Mom... go to the top of this General Forum section and put in an application for the No Girls Left Behind funds. It was collected and given out of the love of the game by the OFC members just for this purpose.

Sounds like to me your daughter would be a wonderful candidate for said funds.

Just My Opinion

Many teams do enough fund raising that you will not have any fees. Team DD was with the last 2 years had families where it didn't cost them anything in team fees. Talk to teams in your area that are still looking for players. They will probably bend over backwards to help you.

My suggestion is that if her team isn't doing any fundraising, go to some local businesses and request a corporate sponsorship.

When I played in college we were supposed to do fundraising for our spring trip to Florida. I went to a local business expecting to get some help and they wrote one check for my entire nut. I only had to knock on one door and write one thank you. You might not be so lucky, but you never know if you don't ask. I'd hate to see a serious ballplayer miss a season due to financial constraints.

Where are you from? I know some teams through fundrasing also have extra money in which they give to players who can't afford to pay. Sometimes you can just give your time back at tourneys and what not to off set the cost.

I like the bowling party idea for fundraising that your group is doing. Nothing better than bowling in the winter, having fun and raising money too.

Thread hijacked....sorry

Hi Newbie,

Again No Girls left behind may be a fit for you. But like others said Most teams usually do fund Raisers. We starting Fund raising backin September and I have girls who have enough money intheir accouts to pay for everthing including Hotels. Still then, they will have money left over to carry on for next year (2011).

WOW! Where are these teams that do fund raising?!? Do you need any more players? If not, where do you have tryouts? Maybe we can come next year if we can't work it out this year. :) :)

Throw out your location and you will find alot that fundraise. I'm with the Diamond Dogs in Peninsula and our organization gives the opportunity to fundraise all the fees plus hotel money. Alot of the teams in our area do the same thing. They are out there, you just have to ask.

Being a floating sub is not a bad deal.........until she plays in a 'Qualifying" tournament. At that point, she will run into rostering problems. The problems vary for each sanction. You really need to understand each sanction's rostering rules or there could be a problem.

Mom, perhaps there are some people around you that would love to see your dd play travel and would help contribute, maybe a few local businesses. Good luck.

A mix between this advice and a little No Left Behind application... would probally work for you.

I would hate to see any kid not play due to lack of parents income. One of our kids parents just lost there job and wanted to quit because of it and I told them no way, there are to many other ways around it. I still need a vendor quakerman..........lol. Times are hard and this is the time to help who ever needs the help, be it from where ever they are or team.

If they don't fundraise... start a "sponsor program" and get her fees paid by a partnership with a group of companies. Hang a banner...that too can be covered. Next thing you know you will have 100's in free money because companies still give to the community.
