NFCA Names PA Renegades ?98 the 2013 Travel Ball National Coaching Staff of the Year

LOUISVILLE, Ky. ? The PA Renegades ?98, led by head coach Art ?Dutch? Harvey and assisted by Jimbo Barry and Bryan Myers have been named recipients of the 2013 NFCA Travel Ball National Coaching Staff of the Year award.

Not bad for a U14 team from Western PA. We got to be doing something right in this region. Check it out.

I'm not discrediting you being voted as "NFCAs 2013 Travel Ball National Coaching Staff of the Year." I curious as to how many other travel coaches are apart of this and how many of them voted. Reading thru the website, NFCA seems like a club to me.

Potato ... I think you're probably discounting this way too much. I don't know the Renegades nor am I an expert on the NFCA, but I believe all college coaches, and quite a few high school and premier travel coaches belong. It sounds to me like anyone can nominate but only members can vote. And look up some of the previous winners ... OFC Batbusters, Beverly Bandits, etc. Congrats to the Renegades coaching staff!

"The purpose of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association is “to educate softball coaches and the public in the game of softball, including coordinating the relationship between softball team membership and other educational endeavors through the development of softball in all its aspects as an amateur sport, including maintaining communication of new ideas and discussion of issues involving softball and education.” Today, the NFCA has grown from 40 members in 1983, to over 4,400 with revenues exceeding $1,200,000 a year. Major programs run by the NFCA include awards programs (All-American, coaching staff of the year, victory club, scholar-athlete and top 10 academic teams), a national convention, recruiting camps, Leadoff Classic tournaments for NCAA Division I, Division III, NAIA and junior college, and USA Today coaches polls for NCAA Division I, Division II, Division III and high school. The NFCA’s newspaper, Fastpitch Delivery, has become one of the nation’s best softball publications, and its Web site, Home Plate on the World Wide Web (www.nfca.org), is one of the most-visited softball-oriented sites in the country, registering over 50 million hits (an average of 92,767 hits per day). The NFCA started publishing Top Recruit, a magazine focusing on teenagers, in 2006 to distribute to member schools to distribute during their annual camps."

The NFCA is a national organization that advances softball across all divisions. The majority of the members are college coaches. There is no way to vote without joining the NFCA. There is no way to nominate without joining the NFCA. The NFCA is made up of people like Pat Murphy, Karen and Ralph Weekly, Kevin Shelton (Texas Glory: Travel Ball ) and me.

I find it disturbing that this honor is belittled as a local 'best pizza' type contest and then the honorees are belittled as self-promoting by people who supposedly love softball.

It is amazing to me that from across the entire country that they picked a 14U coaching staff from Washington PA. They could have picked any team in any age group. The list of former winners is quite impressive but dominated by the left coast, sunnier climes and 18U coaches. Selecting a coaching staff East of the Mississippi, North of the Mason-Dixon and a 14U team to boot, is simply awesome. This is the hall-of-fame and a national championship all wrapped into one for their coaching staff because the selection is by qualified peer coaches, the best in our field.

Again: My congratulations to the PA Renegades Coaching Staff for this honor.
