flea909 - are we neighbors??? :lmao: sounds like how our highschool coaches all sports - Since I don't have the 'right last name' in our area, I guess my dd is just gonna have to work 3 times as hard to hopefully get noticed. Or move??

where i coach, i told the team that it didnt matter if they were 12th graders or 9th graders, that i was going to field the best team possible. my ad is 100% behind me, and told me my job was to field the team that gives us the best chance to win. it just makes it tough because if there are going to be cuts, it would be 12th graders as there is a by-law stating that 12th graders cant play jv.

And that by-law is what makes OHSAA a dinosaur in the sports world compared to other states.

Thus a coach feels bad for the senior girl and leaves her on the team and the rest of the team suffers because and underclassman was not given a spot.

I guess the only thing to do is: Keep the senior and make the squad larger in size.

How many can you have on a varsity team ? Is there a limit in the amount of girls that can be on one team ?

As a coach, I wouldn't mind keeping a senior and playing her when I can ( when you are winning or losing by an amount of runs not obtainable) so she can enjoy her senior season with her friends.

Just wondering.

playtuffnhavefun- whenever we would bring up the seniors not allowed on jv topic, the coach would tell us thats not true anymore. He said all he had to do was write a letter and it would be allowed. I have never believed a word this man ever said since the truth never came out of his mouth, but I am curious to know if this by-law is still in effect?

the coach decides the size of the roster. sometimes the senior might catch an attitude with an underclassman starting ahead of her. id rather make the cut than have this happen, but every case is different. if the senior was a good character kid i would keep her. im going to dress no more than 12 on varsity.

My kid is not a senior and last year she played with 9 Seniors lol. But, I am not a fan of cutting Seniors. If they have been in the program for 4 years they should have a spot. Of course, communication is key. Seniors must be made aware of their standing on the team. If they are not going to get much playing time, they need to be made aware of that. They need to be made aware of the coaches expectations regarding the players role as a teammate. Some wont play, they dont want to spend the end of their senior year committed to a team in which they dont play on. That is where alot of Senior attitudes come from.

The Junior year is the year to identify who is a varsity player and who is not. If the team is picked correctly you wont see to many seniors that are just given a varsity spot. Stick to the no Juniors on JV and the senior log jam will disappear.

We carried 18 on our baseball team in 1975 and 1976. I did the scheduling for our high school team and scheduled games for every day of the week all Spring. In league games, we played our best. In non league games, we played the others and they gained experience.

Who cares about winning every game that you play. Care about winning the league games and the tournament games. That's all that matters.

My senior year (1976), one of the guys who rode the bench in 1975.... won a sectional championship game with a base hit as a pinch hitter. We had found out in 1975 that he was the best bunter on the team as well as being the fastest runner as well. Bunted with two outs and the bases loaded in a tied game.

Couldn't hit a lick... playing defense was an adventure.

I just think give the senior girl a chance to sit the bench with her firiends and if the attitude comes... then you have to do what you have to do.

Time for some HS coaches and AD's to grow a pair and quit being influenced by parents over the subject of who plays. You schedule enough games...everybody plays if you carry a larger than normal roster.

The topic has come up in this forum about the girls when they get older... they start telling their parents to "hush, you are embarrasing me". Usually the 15 and up jetset.

The one thing I know is that in 3 weeks this will all be settled for the year. Someones little Suzy who's private instructor says is the next big thing at D-1 wont get a spot and it will be because some varsity coach who has never even seen a softball game doesn't know talent. Maybe we should all swallow our pride and remember that the chance to wear the school colors and represent the community is a privilege. If our daughters are as good as we think they are they will get their opportunity eventually.

Well said Chico. People need to relax and quit worrying about what they can't control. The coach is gonna do what the coach is gonna do, and any high school coach that bows to parent pressure shouldn't have the job.

There are no solutions but here are some culprits:
OHSAA
Schools who hire teachers as coaches, not coaches.
AD's who let local politics dictate winning (losing).

Tough situations but that is how it is, Softball does not add to the AD fund, it just subtracts.

When my DD was a soph. she didn't make the varsity (we felt a travesty). She kept her head up and when the 1st game rolled around she was called up and started ahead of 2 players that made varsity. Went 3-4 with 3 rbi's - 2 stolen bases and 2 put-outs. scored winning run. when coach walked by he ask if I was proud and I said "Justice had been served." We just need to have our kids ready because you never know. she has started varsity ever since.
