After every weekend I see a lot of umpire bashing. I found this article that might clear some things up.
NASA and the U.S. Military Team up for New Optical Study.
AP Newswire 7/16/07
NASA and the U.S. Military have announced they are jointly researching a breakthrough technique for deep space observation and military applications. The new technique involves common chain link fence. NASA scientists acting on rumors first reported on Ohio?s Fastpitch Connection, have observed the greatly enhanced visual benefits of looking through common chain link fence. While at recent youth fastpitch games, scientists observed that parents and fans that look through the fence have a significant advantage over the umpire who is mere inches away from a play. They also observed that the fences actually give the spectators the ability to see through dust, umpires and players with x-ray type vision while offering binocular type vision for those sitting 200 feet or more away. The irony in all of this is that umpires across the state have said they have been aware of this phenomenon for as long as they can remember.
BTW, The umpiring at the Stingrays was the best we have seen all year, bar none.
(I had some free time today ?)
