Off Season pitching

Just remember Philbob, some girls don't even start pitching until they are 13 or 14....more likely than not, it is the 10-12 yr olds whose parents "encourage" them to practice 6x a week that end up quitting- I won't name names but I know of a young girl who is a freshman this year, an elite pitcher but is quitting due to "burn out" ....

At the end of the day, ask yourself an honest question: "Who wants this more; me or my DD?" jenna is right on. If your DD is decently athletic (NOT looking through the rose colored glasses!) she will have NO PROBLEM taking time off - and starting pitching at 12 or 13? I know a DI college pitcher that did JUST that! ;)

I know Monica Abbot started at age 12. Thanks for the support. All I know is, half the time the dd walks through the house, and occasionally at the store, she's practicing the windmill.

My main question is, How do I keep my 7yo DD from burning herself out? We see an instructor once a week for an hour, and do the same drills etc 3-5 times a week together on our own. I constantly find her out back throwing against a memory foam mattress topper that she set up for herself! LOL! She is obsessed with pitching. I just don't want her to over do it.

longball00,

Let her decide when she wants to do it and when she doesn't. I think the girls that are truly driven from within will never burn-out. It's when we as parents see their potential and push too hard for them to achieve. I like to say Motivate don't push, but even my dd is losing her interest. The two months off at the end of the season are dragging on a bit longer this year. LoL

Starting at 9 dd pitched 3 times a week working on wrist snaps, warm ups and long toss. Then we threw 75 to 100 pitches for about an hour work out. DD is 13 now and didn't pitch much this past summer and the lack of game time shows, but yet we still practiced 3 times a week and we worked on gaining speed and lost the power line and balance. We are now back focusing on powerline and balance instead of gripping and ripping. I still recommend 2-3 months off and once dd is through all the womanly things and growth plates are all closed, if she wants to throw every day, then we will. I will still fight for the 2 to 3 months off so I can have a break, LOL!!!

Thanks for the advice. I am in no way complaining at all as I love the game of FP and come from a competitive SP "career". Maybe that's where she gets her drive from LOL! I in no way PUSH her at all, Just praise and build confidence. Since the last session with the instructor, she now takes a roll of tape to school, and does her flips all day everyday. LOL! I'll just go with the flow, and work with her when she wants, even if it is every day we are home with nothing to do.
