New Jersey Classic has a tournament June 22-25. In this tourney there are 10 teams from California, 2 Arizona, 2 Georgia, 4 Texas, 2 Colorado and 4 from Virginia. It is amazing that Ohio does not have an entry. This is at most a 7 hour drive. Can anyone offer an opinion on this subject?

My guess would be ASA States. Best competition (next to Laser Nation) in Ohio.

That's the problem right there. It's called the New Jersey Summer Classic but it's in Pennsylvania. No one can find it.

1. It is 18-Gold level based on the California teams entered.

2. It is a highly regarded invitational tournament. Did any OH teams apply?

What Ohio teams do you think should be there?

Those events are the best run tourneys we have been to - with the exception of the Stingrays ;)

The Diamond 9 staff is the best at what they do. Getting accepted into most of those events is tough. We are fortunate to have been invited to a couple of their events down in Orlando. We just played in one where we played 5 18u Gold teams, 4 from outside Florida - NM, NJ, Philly and Va Beach in their Sun Classic. They now run all the Showcase tourneys and College Spring Training events for Disney. The one in November has the best teams in the country - and at 10:00 Saturday morning they had 230+ college coaches signed in for the day. It was insane. Our kids guested and most got to play against the Shamrocks and the OC Batbusters.

BTW - there were no Ohio teams at any of these events. The TD simply told me that noone from Ohio sent an application - but he also said he was not aware of any teams that compete at that level. Now we all know there are teams that do - but the softball universe at that level doesn't know it. And for those of you that think these guys are just full of themselves...I was with him during our game against his team when he got a call from OSU's coach K looking for pitchers. His daughter pitches for ND. They are the most connected softball people I have ever met (besides K Whiteside of course).

I know our Ohio teams can compete - but for some reason we don't travel. This week we are at the Carolina Dynamite and I think there is only one Ohio team here as well.

because ohio produces kick ___ teams up to 16u then we go fill teams rosters from out of state. I don't have the answer why, don't ask me . All I know is a portion of the cream of our crop leave us to go fill rosters else where. That causes 2 things, ohio to look weaker than they really are, and other states to look stronger than they really are. thats my take . MD

I thought one of the Stingray teams attended this tournament last year? MD, Ohio does produce good teams at the older levels. I hear the 18U Stingrays (Morman) team did very well this past weekend and played some very good 18U teams. Most of the out of state teams that the Ohio kids are playing for are in the "business" of softball and play very tough and aggressive schedules and play in whichever State that schedule leads them to. Most do not have a parent involved in any part of the program and the kids are "on their own" to work, play and earn their time. I believe most are playing on teams outside of Ohio because of their personal goals and opportunities and not because something is "wrong" in Ohio.

sun dragon -your post would lead me question --is there not any org's in ohio where a girl (every girl ) can meet her personal goals and opportunities ? It's a rhethorical question -- the answer is obviously not or we would not a have dozens of our best kids leaving to play out of state. there is something wrong in ohio at the 18u age group. not hardly any gold level teams offering what the bandits, intensity, dreams gold coast etc offer. If they were the players would not be leaving .at least thats how i see it. MD

I have thought for a while now that the reason Ohio teams don't do the whole Jersey, Vegas, Batbuster, Colorado, etc., circuit is because we have 11 Div. I schools here in Ohio and a bunch more in bordering states. Yes, it greatly reduces chances to go big-time to Big 10, SEC, etc., but an Ohio family simply doesn't have to spend $15,000 a year to have a shot at Div. I.

I suppose someone could start a team based in Ohio that recruits kids from five states away and then play that circuit, but that doesn't seem like much fun to me. I'm not sure as a coach what would be the point in it, unless I'm making my living by coaching the team.

MD dozens of our best are still here. Its pretty simple 14 families don't want to or need to go that route. 14 Chicago families don't either or they wouldn't be bringing kids in from all these other states would he.
There's a hundred ways to skin a cat .If anyone chooses to go that way good for them.I only wish them the best.
If you want to stay here with ohioans that's great too.You can reach your goals either way.I know for a fact that big schools are recruiting players that play on Ohio teams too.

They are at the Premier Tournament in Indy that weekend. I think there 8 or 9 Ohio teams in it.

i know the majority of the best players are staying --but it's that small number of the best of the best that are leaving the state--and thats fine by me . There is nothing in Ohio to match what those other orgs are doing. great point by joea -- unless you desire the SEC , the PAC ten, or big 12 you can play pretty major d-1 by staying and getting recruited in ohio. I'm all for young ladies chasing that dream, doesn't matter how big, you want it, go get it. MD

Let me add to that; was just at a college camp this past weekend and some questions were asked. First was do you really need to move up in age (14u playing 16 or 18u) to be notice by college?, and they (college coaches) said NO. Also do they come to see the player not go to a certain tourney; with a few exceptions. I remember they mention the Colorado one simply because they said they are a ton of teams ( It think they said in the 100's) there. From what I gather they (college coaches) have only a couple that go out to see and I believe there is only a few times they can go?? Also just because the tourney is called a showcase does not mean they will be there (I knew that). It was also said it really doesn't matter what team you play for.

You players are a product and you (and parent/player) need to sell them. If they do not know your there they are not going to notice you. For the last three years I have been preparing for this kind of stuff because I did not want to leave anything out and have an opportunity pass; I still have a lot to learn. I do this for the entire team not just my daughter. What I mean by preparing I mean I go to clinics where there are open question and answer forum and talked to parent/players who have been or going to colleges for softball. Just this past weekend a college(D1) approached my DD handed her (coaches) card (business card?) to her and want her(DD) to call her to come visit campus because they are very interested in her. So we must be doing something right. My DD does all the letter writing and keeps in contact with the colleges she is interested in; now that I shown her and my team, they are on their own, but with help if needed. Honestly I do not give a rats behind if she goes to a D1 or D4; as long as some college is paid for and she can still enjoy the game she loves, because after college softball....welcome to the working world. By the way we are a 14u team.

I know I could almost start this with a new thread but this one was headed this way, sorta.

Agree with you MD. I'm not aware of any teams in Ohio matching what the out-of-state Org's (that a number of the Ohio "studs" are flocking to) are doing.

I also don't think it's just about goals of playing in the SEC, PAC Ten, etc... I think some (or most) have already committed or verballed. These girls just want to play with and against the best players out there because they are competitive kids and want to continue to get better and become more prepared for the next level, where ever they play their college ball.
