You are sent 2 copies of your NLI. You sign and send one back the other is yours. That is where the ceremonial signing comes in

Right, good point!... I was trying to reference the non-NLI signings or "letter of commitment" signings you see some D3 programs do for their kids since there is no official NLI to sign at that level. cork34 had asked if in a D2 or D1 program you would get to sign an NLI if no money was offered. Although there would be no NLI, I was questioning whether or not a D1 or D2 program would let a PWO sign a "letter of commitment" ... my guess is no, which is sad. Still a tremendous honor to play at a D1 or D2 level as a PWO or otherwise.

We were going to do kind of our own internal letter for walk-ons to sign a couple of years ago (D2), but then I figured, heck with that, I'll just give them at least a bit of money and have them sign an NLI. If we do offer a small amount, however, I do make sure the girls know that the NLI is binding and to make sure she understands the terms. In other words, if some better situation came along after the signing, the NLI binds her to us.

I thought I saw that D3 either has passed legislation or maybe is considering it to have a letter of intent (I'm not sure of what they are calling it) that would be non-binding, but so that athletes can have a signing just as they can for D1 and D2.
