To ladyknigts~curious why do you think it is overreacting?

I hear alot in these posts about being fair...guess what...life isn't fair, you don't always get what you deserve, cheaters win, life isn't what you make of it, and I could go on...so get over it.

I checked my DD's grades and don't see where she didn't get credit but she did not attend as there was a tourney? What class was it in?

I still don't see the harm in it though...maybe I am wrong, neither of my kids went to the event so neither received the extra credit, but it certainly did not deduct from their grades either...there have always been silly reasons to receive extra credit...so what if it has to do with eating dinner out with your team...we all got to eat! And if you choose not to, you just don't go! Simple as that.

Slight Hi-Jack alert but along the same lines at this same school....

At this same school previous two years, although it truly is a fantastic school, both my dd and I learned the hard way that you don't always receive what you earned as three times in four grading periods she lost 10 - 50 pts and each time that was enough to drop her from A to a B jeopardizing her 4.0 goal. Twice we noticed the incorrect 0/10 or 0/50 due to teacher error right away and advised in which the grades were changed, but once with a lecture from the teacher that dd did not notice soon enough, thankfully the administration is GREAT over there and did the right thing.

So, yes we don't always get what we earn, but our DD's need to learn you are only a victum if you allow it(To MUSTY's point... Speak up if she's getting a 0/5) and do so knowing that nobody is deliberately trying to harm anyone in these scenarios as we are talking about people and when people are involved just about anything can happen... ^_^!

Wonder how much of these strange scenarios are occuring because the Schools are depending on sooo many volunteers (Non Educated in Education) being leaned on and delegated to develop/facilitate these types of activities...Hmmm

I think its overeacting. Five points really isnt jack. If a kid cant go but really wants those points I'm sure the teacher would let them do something else. My son got extra points for going to the art museum and being on time for class. Whoopee!

As posted earlier, it is true, life is not fair but Education must be.

Giving benefits to athletes, PTA kids or asking students/parents to spend money at a restaurant for grades etc is wrong .

The classroom environment needs to have structure and the teacher needs to instruct to their curriculum/syllabus period.
They can talk about extracurricular activities but, should not give grades/points for things outside of the curriculum.

Unfortunately; we have much Bigger issues with Education in Ohio and the U.S. than this but; to solve problems you must start somewhere and this is just as good as any..

My assumption would be Jersey Mikes approched someone in the school and said, "Hey, we will make this a school donation night, we will give a percentage of our sales (for that day), so get as many kids to eat here from your school that day.

Subway offers school cards for any and every school. Get a card at you local Subway, register your school, and everytime you use the Subway card (which is relaoadable), your school earns money. It could be coming from Grandma in Florida for a school in Ohio.

Back to the WTF; I thought it was silly for my DD to earn 5 extra points just becasue I signed a grade paper.

Liberal grading system... just sets us (USA) to stay behind all the other major educated countries in the world. Can't wait to see this "trophies are a must" generation get out in the workplace and find they just got a terrible annual review and their parents can't buy them into "A" ranked employee bucket or buy them the VP's chair or even into a manager's position. Yeah, earn that... good luck to those that don't mind that our children are part of this disasterours "lesson". They are experiencing a softened American and I for one won't let my kids be apart of something like this. And yes I NEVER write to the school or complain... this would change my mind if the kids come home with this BS!!!

I thought you guys were overreacting but now I see your just being ridiculous. If you truly believe that five points of extra credit here or there seriously undermines a kids work ethic or GPA or puts America behind the eight ball concerning education your nuts.

its not just this... I'll expand my thoughts and introduce a mini hi-jack.... the no score keeping in early years of games... the many times of redoing tests till they get it right... the no grades till 5th grade... the constant "it's ok" and never let a kid fail and learn from mistakes. Call me/it crazy... maybe old skool. Is what it is.

Fact is nobody can buy smarts...and you surely can't outsmart an idiot (not calling anyone an idiot). And if "common sense" was so "common" why don't more people have it. Just have a hard time with the purchasing of extra credit. How about a 1500 word book report that actually is terrible to do but in the end is honest work and actually may enhance their minds.

That would actualy require the teacher to read the report...............not to sure in the days of teachers unions if that would fly

Lady, get away from your computer, you were already crazy. If "lame" threads bother you maybe you need to step away. Go out and get a life then OFC wouldn't be your world. Volunteer somewhere, join a shuffleboard league, hang out at McDonald with your beeps. Whatever you do, don't read the threads you don't like and they won't make you crazier. Stop wishing for a world where everyone is just like you.

The issue is not the 5 points but; how the points are earned and posted/averaged.

Personally, I am not a fan of any type of extra credit especially; credit outside of content area. The teacher should make sure they stick to delivering their content area and insure students are aware of what is expected in the course and how they will be graded.

Don't see where you get "you guys" with "seriously undermines a kids work ethic or GPA or puts America behind the eight ball". Consensus is grades should be from academics and not cash, would you argue against that?

School in question has done 10 points the first half of school, if they do another 10 in the second half, that's 20 for the year. That can easily move someone up a grade level and move someone into the Honor Roll. Should cash be a determining factor? What about the poor kids whose families just couldn't swing that extra $20? Finally, if it's okay to buy grade points, where is the cutoff to becoming unacceptable and who decides that? Donate $1,000 and not even go to class?

They most likely did that just to bribe the kids to eat there so the school could get more money. Thats pretty ridiculous on their part. But your right, why cant your daughter get extra credit just because she didnt go out to eat.
