Paying for high school uniforms

How many schools out there are having their players buy their own uniforms? If they do what are they running? We were told that we would be paying $60 for the shirt and that they would supply the pants, they do get to keep their shirts when they get done with school ball. What are the thoughts out there about this?

This is a pet peeve of mine. I beleive if a school offers a sport, they should supply ALL of the necessities. That includes uniforms. If the school can't afford the uni's then I would go to the Boosters.

We got new uni's last year and they were about $80 for the set.

Our new coach this year ( 4 years 4 different coaches) is the head of the boosters and his response was "this is how it's going to be done this year".

Wow, Thats not a very good way to start off. Sounds like someone has a power complex. I would check with the School Board to see if they have a uniform policy. Our school has a 4 year rotation on new Uniforms. We had gotton away from it for a while but we are getting it back on track.

i know when my son played baseball they had two sets we bought both shirts.
the shirts had their names on the back. we were able to keep them. they wore
them each year also.
for girls we didn't have to buy them.

If it actually helps the schools budget issues, I would not have a problem with it. I would much rather pay for the uniforms than have bus service to the sports teams cut or eliminated. Some schools teams sponsor fundraisers for many expenses, maybe uniforms could be covered that way.

Interesting question. I think parents need to be more involved with the schools finances. I think one of the reasons many school's levy fail is because people don't understand where the money is being spent. I personally don't like the thought of buy uniforms. I purchase them for summer ball, I should have to purchase them for school ball. Our taxes should pay for them.

I would prefer to pay for them, that way the girls get to keep them.

I am not a school board member nor am I a district treasurer, but School Boards give each sport "X" amount of money (sometimes "X" amount is budgeted to the Athletic Department then the AD budgets the amount to each team). ?This amount is based on what is requested prior to establishing that year's school budget (so at least one year out, sometimes longer). ?Sometimes you get the requested amount, sometimes not. ?If new uniforms were not requested or were deleted from the budget, then the team must find an alternate source for new uniforms. ?Sometimes this is through the Athletic boosters, sometimes through fundraisers, and sometimes through parents.

For softball, I am probably pretty close with the priority for funding at:

1. Umpires
2. Field maintenance materials/services
3. Sports equipment
4. Uniforms.
5. The pizza parties after Friday night games (Just kidding, I was seeing if you are paying attention) ;D

Seriously though, Even schools with no pay-to-participate programs are on tight budgets. ?If they spend money on uniforms, then some other program (academic or athletic) is going to do without. ?

I know that Athletic Booster programs do their best to try to help ALL of the school's athletic programs, but their money is also budgeted at the beginning of the year (or earlier). ?It could be that the old coach did not request new uniforms from any source and now it is too late in the ballgame to get funding.

It is only right that if the families have to pay for new shirts, that they should get to keep them.

If you have had 4 coaches in 4 years, it is quite apparent that no one has really taken an interest in the softball team's budget for quite some time. ?This might be a topic to bring up with your AD.

How about the Baseball team and other teams? If they are doing the same then it seems fare, but if not.

Is it true that Avon Lake is charging girls to play spring sports? How many other schools are "pay to play"

We have always had a 75 dollar type fee which could be going to 400 next year due to Levy failure for each sport. Not sure of multi child discount or not, but time will tell....

Yahoo! maybe we can keep sending 12 girls on a second bus to a basketball game, instead of all three teams on one and save some dollars....

One of the points that I was trying to make earlier is that there has not been any stability on the softball team coaching staff. So, no requests for funds have been made, probably for at least the last four years. Is this the new coaches fault? No. Is it the football coaches fault that he submits for funding for new uniforms and gets it? No. Does the reponsibility fall on the AD? Absolutely!

Remember, the squeaky wheel gets the oil. If no one squeaked, then they will not get the oil. If no one (AD) was watching out for a particular part (softball), then once again, no oil.

There is also an expense for transportation.

As far as buying the uniforms, we haven't had to do it, but I have heard of some schools doing it by choice so they can keep the uniforms, as some have mentioned.

Thanks for the input, all. What I have found out is.....

The boys do have to pay for uniforms... total cost picked up by the boosters.

The girls do work basketball games in the concession stand and they clean up the gym after games... this pays for their bus rides.

I will be talking with the AD next week..... I'll share that conversation then.
