Pitching and Pitchers Discussion Pitchers' helmets

I think it's a personal choice. Having said that, my oldest DD would most definitely be wearing one if she were a pitcher. She wears one now in the infield. Youngest DD catches so that goes without saying she wears a helmet.

I was just reflecting on the whole head protection issue last night while watching the Pens-Rangers game. Almost every player now wears a plastic eye visor that is attached to their helmets. I also saw some vintage photos of Gordie Howe wearing nothing. It may have taken 40 years, but things eventually change, even for a tough-guy sport like hockey which is undoubtedly one of the most tradition-laden sports out there.

I make my daughter wear one for pitching and corners. She can not wear it when she gets to college if she wants to but until then is my job to keep her safe as can while allowing her to do things. A facemask keeps her safe and she can still play without too much trouble. I think is least she can do for her parents who cart her around.

I'm all for personal choice, but a catcher MUST wear a mask in a game and a batter MUST wear a helmet. Wouldn't the same reasoning apply to the pitcher (and probably to the corners). The ball often comes out from a bat a lot faster than it comes in from the pitcher!!! Why is this not a mandatory rule?

If and when this gets to MLB, there will be even worse cries than there is by some about the "sissifying" of the NFL. I think of it a lot like smoking though ... back many years ago, people didn't know how dangerous it was to their health ... and of course, there were always stories of so and so who smoked 3 packs a day and lived to 100. But I think most people today realize that the odds of getting lung cancer, etc. are greatly increased and many of us have relatives (my dad for example at the age of 59) who died from it.

As few as 15 years ago or so, I don't think most people thought much about concussions ... I remember people laughing when someone's "bell got rung". But now it's being proven that repeated concussions greatly increase the odds of permanent damage. While most baseball/softball players shouldn't have repeated head injuries, it certainly is more possible for catchers and the collisions at the plate, and it's just why take the chance ... cause some think it's sissifying the game ... sorry, but in my mind, it's not affecting the quality of the game much if at all ... it's just smart.

It only takes one wrong moment to ruin so many things...I would insist my girls wearing gameface if they were pitching.

when my older daughter was asked to play third in college she refused to wear one and I was nervous. In high school I would of insisted but eventually they have to make their own decisions as an adult.

Why a parent would NOT make their daughter wear a mask when they are legal to wear is beyond me. You all have beautiful kids, it sure would be a shame for a bad hop to disfigure or hurt your child. Nows the time to use your authority as a parent and make your kid safe. Its real simple Wear your Mask or dont play
