My daughter had to pitch this weekend when the temperature was in the low 30's. ?Now for my daughter she relize heavily on being able to feel the seem (gripping it) and when her fingers are cold and numb she cannot get the proper spin and snap down. ?What thoughts or ideas does anyone have for this problem? ?In the dugout..and on the field.. ?I have some ideas but would like to here more suggestions. ?Thank You

Battle, if your DD has not made it to HS yet, just wait. The problem with cold is even worse come spring time, and she will be in it everyday, for the first couple weeks. Invest in hand warmers, and one of those pouches you stick your hands in, and it fastens around your waist. Have her pitch in cold weather, and different conditions, so she can get use to it, and it won't be a shock. She will be shocked the first game she throws into a strong headwind, or crosswind, as to how it affects the movement on her pitches. Best of Luck.

The small individual hand warmers (that hunters and skiers use) are a must!. There was a time when my DD wouldn't ptich in long-sleevse- a few games with rain and in the low 40's changed that! Also believe it or not a scarf and hat in the dugout (while "not cool") helps with overall warnth

welcome to ohio softball. Get used to it because it is the norm in high school.

DD really struggled this weekend, too. Would it be leagl to wear a pouch to keep her hands warm? Or would that only be for the dugout?

Make her practice outdoors no matter of temperature. We played fall ball as well and I had my DD practice outside all week. We throw in all conditions, cold, rain, heat, in Ohio you will see all of these. She adjust very well when it is game time because she has practiced in these conditions.

Definitely keep a supply of the little instant hand warmers in her bat bag to use in between innings. ?

Some girls actually stick them in their sock when they are on the field. ?Whether this is legal or not - I don't know. ?But if there is a time out - a quick warmup of the fingertips can be done.

coop24, That's called soccer :)

Last year my Freshman DD ptiched 3 innings in a light snow storm ... never thought I'd see the day, but I did. Buy her Under Armour. If it gets cold enough, she will wear it.

We are having the same problem, my daughter is used to pitching in hot weather, having lived in Florida and Arizona the past 6 years prior to moving here last year. She still does not want to wear her underarmour, but I take it anyway and she will wear it if she gets cold enough. I like the idea of the hand warmers in the socks and the hat and scarf in the dugout also. I think the cold sucks!!! >:(

One of the things I've learned is that you always practice in game like settings. That being said, my DD has pitched in the snow, sleet, strong winds, and has done so wearing jackets, hoodies and under armour. The pitcher may not like this and may even resist depending on the age, but if they are serious and dedicatd they will appreciate it, if not now then later. We do live in the North!!!

DD used to refuse to wear Under Armour - if it was cold enough she would wear a mock turtleneck - but refused to listen to parents about warmth of UA. HS coach required it last year - she complained about it until the first time she "had" to wear it - now we are buying more. ;)

Of course, Mom & Dad don't know anything, but Coach sure does!!! ;D

Buy your supply of hand warmers NOW, as they are marketed with the hunters in mind and are sometimes unavailable in the spring.
