What would be considered a good, accurate radar gun? I'm looking at getting one, but also don't want to spend a ton of money.
Is it true the more you spend the better the radar gun?

Thanks

Closest thing I could find to a neutral comparison:

Both the Bushnell Velocity radar gun and Bushnell Speedster II radar gun will work well for baseball and softball (especially little league baseball and recreational league softball). Those applications generally do not use large diamonds, so the Bushnell radar speed guns will be able to accurately track the speeds of a pitcher throwing a baseball or softball. Another possibility for these applications is the Sports Radar Speed Gun (which can also be purchased with a monitor that can be viewed by the players). SpeedTrac Speed Radar Gun, which is a hands free model is another good choice (especially during a practice or bullpen session when it can be placed between the pitcher or catcher).

For high school and college level baseball and softball, where the diamonds are a little larger, we would recommend the Sports Radar Speed Gun SR3600, or the JUGS radar gun models. JUGS speed guns, have long been used in these levels of baseball and softball as well as professional leagues.

You can pick up a Bushnell for around $80 and they seem ok. I've used Tracer, they are around $180.

I have a Jugs and a Pocket Radar. The Jugs is around $800 and huge and the Pocket Radar is $200 and the size of a cell phone. Pocket Radar gives more readings that are crazy (93 mph, for example) and is usually 1 or 2 mph lower than Jugs, but works just fine. It's so much easier to transport and to use that I never use the Jugs any more. And I don't have to constantly worry about battery re-charging like I did with the Jugs.

93 mph huh ... I think the pitching coach of the girls I coached a couple of summers ago might have been using that pocket one ...

I have the speedster II and it is more than enough for tryouts and scouting. I think it was under $125.

If you're a dad charting your own DD's progress, you really don't need a Jugs, because you simply don't need that kind of accuracy - although my Bushnell was extremely accurate. I used a Bushnell and it worked great - very affordable. If I was looking today, I'd invest $200 in the Pocket Radar simply for the convenience of size. Honestly, we only used the gun a couple times a year to do "pitch speed difference comps", like to see if her change was a certain % slower than her fastball, etc.

Now, for a team coach gunning prospects at tryouts, maybe splurge on the Jugs.

Pocket Radar gun works very well. Plus, you can use it with no one really noticing--which is very helpful sometimes.

I bought the Pocket Radar fun online for around $100 a year ago. It is a great radar gun that is very accurate. And that it fits into my backpack and is no larger than a camera is a huge plus.

I purchased a Pocket Radar gun this past spring. I've put it against most of the other big name guns and it's extremely accurate. It's compact and discrete. Being a coach of 9/10 yr olds they tend to get "itchy" when you pull out the radar gun ;&. I like this one because a lot of times they don't' realize I'm even using it!
