program direction

I'm trying to focus on a diriction that is a compromise between travel ball and rec ball for 12U/14U players. We are a community based program and I'm in central Ohio. I'm wondering could we find enough teams to

1)play in a 12U and 14Uleague in June playing DHs one night per week so we can practice 2 other nights or
2) set up enough scrimmages without having to spend multiple hours doing so, say one night per week, DHs?

We would then play in tournaments in July and practice 1 or 2 other nights.

We've tried the practice in June, play in July method, but we lack game experience in the first couple of tournaments and it really hurts our ability to compete. We do improve, but it isn't fair to our kids or our competition to be so "game poor"

I'm trying to avoid the 5-6 day/night necessary to be a top notch travel squad, yet have enough quality time to teach higher level ball to previous rec ball players. I'm looking at 3-4 day night commitment at a time. Many of our kids are still exploring other sports and activities and we want to keep them playing while they figure it out without forcing them to choose a sport in the 6th, 7th or 8th grade.

Are we just stuck with the 2 choices or are there serious alternatives. I am aware of the commitment necessary to be top level travel teams, I'm looking for a serious compromise for the rest of the kids for whom rec ball is not enough.

I know in our area, NE Ohio, there are several leagues, (OGSO, Ohio Girls Softball), Emerald Necklace, and Cuyahog Valley Elite league, these are supposed to be a midway point between the to levels you describe.
The latter two leagues mentioned are locally based, OGSO has districts all over the state and actually play a state tournamnet. If I am not wrong I think the OGSO follows the Little League cutoff date as far as Age eligibility. Which I think is like Aug 1st cutoff.

Try this link: www.leaguelineup.com/welcome.asp?url=ogso

They might be able to help.

in central ohio, there's the GCGC, but i dont have the link for them...looks like a mix of community-based travel teams and some "B" level travel teams...but rec-ballers might be at a disadvantage, but it will be a learning experience

i think they do something like this in lancaster as well, but someone from that end would have to comment on that....(people from lancaster, sorry if i'm mistaken)
