Punishment Sprints at 102'F. Are You Kidding Me?

I saw a coach from Chicago punishing her team for losing four games straight at Stingrays. She had them running on the football field below diamonds six and eight at about noon. Can you imagine running these big girls for two 100 yard dashes, and a series of wind sprints at 102'F for punishment? She was willing to continue with the drill until I threatened to have her and her team booted from the tourney.

Don't know if I had the authority at the tourney, but I would fire someone at work for issuing an order that would endanger a kid like that.

Sure does sound rediculous in the year 2012 ... I'm glad to hear you said something.

Reminds me of two a day football workouts 25 years ago when we had to run for punishment and also was prevented from drinking water as additional punishment (as a team) for one person screwing up.

What age group? On Friday, one of the 14u teams from Indiana had a coach that yanked several girls in one inning (one at a time) each for making an error, immediately after they made the error, and then berated them as they came into the dugout...my husband noticed that on Saturday, this coach was not with the team anymore.

Good for you sherman. No way that coach deserves to be in charge of young people. An email to the head of the teams Orgnaization might be in order.

Question for all you guys/gals - Is there anyway to follow up on this? Report it to the org? Stingrays organizer? Sanctioning body? This sounds like a coach that needs some Health and Safety training.

actually see many teams in the south do sprints after games....win or lose. After playing a few tournaments down South I soon understood why. While our girls wilted just after 2-3 games, many of their teams were still fresh and strong after 4-5 games with heat index 120+. And just to be clear, this particular team won 6 strait including championship game on Sunday in 100+ heat doing sprints after each game including the final game.

Shockwave, you bring up a good point. Are we too soft on the players? My first reaction to the post was that this coached should be removed, but, in hindsight, I can remember back in the ol' football days in HS and well, you can figure out the rest.

At first I had same reaction as everyone,

My DD said so, we did worse when they played????? They'd run 2 round trip 250' Poles after wins no matter temperature, worse on other things... She was serious...... She admitted it toughened them up for the grind of the state tournament...

That was just one perspective

Saw this in Toledo this weekend where a team had to run sprints in the outfield grass after a loss. This team does not do this every game. Saw the end of 4 of them (we played them once ourselves) and they did not run the other times. Oh yeah it was still around 100 degrees at the time.
Girls was beat down red and just tore up.
There is a time to strengthen girls and there are times to be on the cautious side for their health. JMO

I agree that we are generally too soft on kids and two or three 40-yard sprints probably are fine in that weather, but a smart coach will always err on the side of health and safety. If a kid drops and dies or suffers serious injury doing multiple sprints in 100+ degree weather (while playing games on either side of the sprints), I wouldn't want to be the coach who has to live with that the rest of my life.

At the same time, I never quite understood the sprints for punishment after losses. If a team sprints for conditioning after every game, I get that, but not for punishment after losses. Maybe it toughens them up, maybe I'm wrong and I'm too soft.

I can see an argument for having kids run for not working hard or playing well ... but never in 102 degree heat, sorry. I'd rather be called "soft" than be responsible for putting a kid in the hospital or worse yet ...

Are you sure she did it in 100+ temps after playing a couple games? Lots of very successful teams have never run as punishment so I don't think it's required to be successful. I think it's a tool for lessor coaches who don't have the ability to motivate and instruct for success. It's an easy way for them to look and think like they are doing something.

Not in those temps, 80's yeah, hers wasn't punishment, they just did them win or lose but not 102 though. Their regular workouts were tough off season too..... I won't list details, but just as close as football would be.

Hearing it at Rays yesterday I thought it crazy as well......

This reminds me of a pet peeve of mine (I have many). That's a different subject, so I won't get into it here.

What was the age group of the girls?
