Questioning a players age

If a coach requests a players age be checked at an NSA Tournament, is there a penalty against his team if the girl is found to be of age? Would the opposing team be disqualified if it is found they are using an overage girl?

You wouldn't be penalized for asking. I had a girl on my 10U team that looked like she was 16. She was bigger than I am (which isn't saying much) and we got questioned all the time. I always kept her birth certificate in my score book. People used to ask me how many kids my 3rd baseman had. Some kids are just big! I'm not sure of the penalties as I have never of heard of anyone trying to sneak an overage girl on their team, but I'm sure they would not be allowed to play her.

The penalty for an unsuccesful challenge is the coach loses his turn and must remove his tiles from the board.

10u can be tough. Some of the girls start their growth during that time so you can certainly get some big girls by comparison. There are also folks that cheat in this age group show I think there should never be a penalty for questioning. Have copies of your kids birth certificates and it takes 30 seconds to resolve the issue. No big deal.

I saw some kids at tiger town this weekend at 10u and 12u and my 1st thought "hope that coach keeps the birth cert handy" There was a 10u pitcher wearing blue who was 18 inches taller than any of her teammates. looked out of place . and quite amusing . (not to mention lasers gold having 3-4 kids that look 15-16)

You must file a protest with the TD or UIC if you suspect that a team is using an ineligible player. Unlike a normal protest, where the intent to protest must be made immediately before the next pitch, a player eligibility protest must be filed before the end of the game being protested. There is a protest fee of $75 for qualifying and post season tournaments, but most tournament charge a fee of some sort.

The penalty is a forfeit of the game. There is no penalty for the team filing the protest, however they will not recover the protest fee if the player is found to be eligible.

There was some certain team from east of the border that used 12u players in 10u tournement last fall, I know there is nothing you can do now but that shows the class of the team and organization some people feel the need to cheat.

Sometimes it is so hard to tell. A cousin of ours has a daughter who turned 11 in May of her second year of 10U and she was 5'7". It was crazy. She was taller than a couple of her coaches.

I have a couple girls that are or near 5'-5"+ and it does look a bit strange when (I) barely have to look down to talk to them. Then you can ask'em a question and watch them squirm. LOL...

We had the fortunate/unfortunate task of playing a 10u team last year that averaged over 5' and several at 5'7" and several needed to be checked .. I was called right before our game against them by a highly touted Ohio program that told me to get my $100 bill out and have fun!!! Apparently worked once prior to the tourney we were in....

Thing is when they have a boyfriend that drives....just kidding

We just let it ride and we learned a lot...

When my dd was in 5th grade and playing CYO softball for her school, we had another team question the gender of my dd and two other girls on the team because they played so well, had short hair and boyish nick-names.

This went beyond the game and the team actually filed a complaint with CYO and the softball commissioner came out to our game and interviewed the girls to ensure they were not boys. LoL

We still laugh about this today, especially now that they have long hair, curves, etc... Best part was they were physically smaller than most of the other team. Some folks just don't know how to handle a butt whoopin. LoL

I know people do thing type of thing when they are desperate for enough players to field a team in a tournament. Saw it happen last summer.

My DD's last year playing rec. ball we played all the way to the championship game and the team that won brought in a couple of ringers. One, I'm told, was old enough to drive.
