Hello, I live in Virginia, but I found this board thru a google search and joined because my state doesn't have a forum like this. Anyway, I am new to travel ball, so I have a bunch of questions. I'm starting up an 8U travel team, and I know that both ASA and USSSA use a girls age as of January 1 to determine their classification. My question is this, if a girl turns 9 in June for example, can she play 8U until December 31 of that year, or are there other dates where she would be classified as playing age 9?

Thanks for any help I might receive. I hope I'm not in over my head with this team. I'm starting the team from scratch, so I'm a little stressed lol

Welcome to the community, I've never coach 8 under Travel Team. I've Coached girls that were under 8 years of age, with parents that act like 10 years old.

Coaching any age group is a Challenge welcome to the world of Coaching.

I believe and if I'm wrong someone can correct me. That ASA rules on age goes as followed, what every age you are on Jan 01 is your age for that calendar year.

Not sure about USSSA.

Thanks for the response. I didn't know if they would be playing age 8 for the calendar year if they are 8 on Jan 1, or if there is a point in the year when they would be considered 9.

Also, I tried to register on the ASA website, and it was going to charge me $25.50 per player. Is that correct? I didn't think players were charged

.

Contact your local ASA director. You can register as an individual or team that will include insurance sometimes it is better to have your Director register you as a team it helps with national births etc.

Here is link that may . You want the JO Youth Director...

That Should register every player for local, state and national events it's been a while but for that price you should get player ID cards and insurance I would still contact your JO youth director first you may get better pricing

I've tried calling and emailing both but can't get a response. I was told by another 8U coach that he never had to register his team online. They show up to the tournament and paid the sanction/registration fee there. He said he has never did anything online

Talking from a TD point of view, most tournaments have someone available that can handle all of that for you. But some don't, I would check with the TD before enter if they will have someone to take sanction and registration for your team. Just on a side note, it could take weeks or longer to get a return phone call or a email reply from are ASA rep. So I can understand why you would be concern about getting this all done.

Yes, I want to try to get this done as quick as I can. I want to give the parents of my team an idea of the cost they are going to incur. It's very frustrating

If you have different insurance, not ASA, you can just pay the 35.00 sanction fee and print off the blank ASA Roster to use for asa tournaments. If you need the insurance then yes it's 15-25 per player.

What kind of Insurance do you get for $15 - $25 dollars for each player Jose?

Is it just liability insurance? Does it cover medical? What does the Insurance cover with ASA?

our area had bollinger policies. If you did the ACE update coaches training you ask received coaches liability insurance. I will dig up an old policy and post.

Over the years we only had two times a family had to use it once at 11u player collision at home plate ended up with a back injury and at 16u three ladies collided in the outfield on a short pop fly. one outfielder and the SS got concussions and the CF fractured a couple vertebrae in her neck all families used the policy to help cover medical cost

Thanks for the info Jose. If you get insurance, is it good for both ASA & USSSA? Or do you have to get seperate policies for each association?

I do not know much on USSSA,as we are ASA Commissioners, but I do believe it will work with your ordinary USSSA tournaments, our teams does.

Thanks for the response. By the way, what size balls do the 8U tournaments use?
