Redshirt?

I heard a college player was injured before she started her freshman year and never played in a game. She is missing her entire Freshman year. She has not been "redshirted." Can a player be redshirted at a later time (Sophomore or Junior year) for an injury that occurred when they were a freshman? Seems to me like the player is giving up a year of eligibility. Also, can a player be redshirted as a freshman without an injury attached simply for developmental reasons?

I was told by a college coach during our recruiting process that a player can be redshirted for a year, in response to the second part of your question. Can't really speak for the first part of the question.

This is probably a question that you want to pose to a college coach or compliance director at an athletic department to get the real answer. From what I understand "redshirting" a player is a process that is actually petitioned by to the NCAA. There are guidelines for each sport as to how much they can play and still be able to utilize the redshirt option. I would assume (remember about assumptions) that each sport and athletic department has some input if they want an athlete to be redshirted or not. It is going to affect scholarship counts, recruiting plans etc. That being said, I would find it hard to imagine a coach not supporting a redshirt application for a player that did not play in any games.
I also do not think that the application to be redshirted has to be done immediately, though I am sure there are time restrictions of some sort. Best bet, talk to a compliance officer, or call the NCAA directly.

i dont think they have to redshirt her if she is not a scholarship player she can be off team for a year and not even burn a redshirt i have heard if that in football my buddy played at marshall and was a walk on (no scholarship)broke leg on 4 wheeler and was not put on roster till next year and then redshirted but for softball does not make alot of sense there are not millions of dollars possibly waiting so a girl probably wont stay in school extra years just to play softball???????maybe at some big schools?????????????????????
