JOHNSON CITY — An opportunity for one side went astray while the other side capitalized on a single pitch Friday in the opening round of the District 1-AAA softball tournament, and the result was Dobyns-Bennett’s 1-0 upset of host Science Hill. “It was a great game and it was a great game the last time we played Science Hill,” noted Lady Indians coach Andy Hubbard. “We finally started hitting it a little bit and got some big hits. I’m tickled to death.” In Friday’s other games, David Crockett blanked Volunteer 5-0 and Cherokee posted a 7-1 win over Tennessee High. The tournament enters double elimination play for Monday’s semifinals. The Lady Chiefs (12-12) play Daniel Boone at 5 p.m. in the first semifinal, followed by Crockett (30-9) taking on D-B (16-13). DOBYNS-BENNETT 1, SCIENCE HILL 0 A sixth-inning chance saw the Lady Hilltoppers load the bases with no outs, but Morgan Riffle worked out of the situation with two fielder’s choices in the infield and a flyout. Riffle scattered three hits in the shutout performance. Following Riffle’s escape, the lower seed produced one mighty swing. Allison Reese took the first pitch of the seventh over the foul pole down the left-field line. “Honestly I was leaving it all out on the field and swung my heart out,” Reese said. “It was potentially the last game for our seniors and really I played for them tonight. I was 0-for-3 before that and no one expected that.” Sejal Neas also had an impressive evening in the circle. The Lady Hilltoppers hurler struck out five with seven hits and two walks issued. “It was a great game,” said Bob Dempsey, who filled in for Science Hill coach Jerry Higgins. “It was a great pitched game, they got out of trouble and we got out of trouble. Sometimes the defense picks the offense up (like) there in the sixth, then she (Reese) came up and got it all.” DAVID CROCKETT 5, VOLUNTEER 0 The Lady Pioneers advanced thanks in part to a two-hit gem thrown by Kara Weems. She had to work out of some early jams, but struck out seven. The Lady Falcons left five runners on in the first three innings, then Weems retired the last eight batters in order. Mackenzie Baldwin homered in the first inning to give the Lady Pioneers the lead. Two innings later, Sydney Fox raced around after her leadoff double for the game’s second score. Crockett tacked on three insurance scores in the bottom of the sixth. Alli Chandler and Jersey Wines had the Lady Falcons’ hits. CHEROKEE 7, TENNESSEE HIGH 1 All nine Cherokee starters reached base in the game. Paisley Lyons went 1-for-1, drawing three walks, scored two runs and stole two bases. Faith Webb had a hit to go with a pair of walks and two runs scored. Siera Light provided a pop from the No. 8 spot in the lineup, collecting two RBIs and going 1-for-2. In front of her, Hailey Elkins drew two bases-loaded walks. Audrey Mowell was 1-for-3 and scored twice.
