Rest and Naggin Injuries

I'm going to be all over the dartboard on this thread so bear with me..

DD gets somewhere between 7 to 8 hours a day, with a schedule that includes 2-3 games a week plus practice, normally M-F. Sundays and or Saturdays maybe some hitting instruction. So, bedtime is 10, but you know how girls push it, by the end of the week, DD looks exhausted, almost misses the bus, runs out the house, probably bites into pop tart without unwrapping it...does this eventually lead to poor performance? nagging injuries?

I know this sounds like a "my DD has too much going on" rant, but i think she is typical of a girl RIGHT NOW, since school ball is in and school is winding down...If I stay up late, like now, it affects me later in the week, but I'm old....

are our girls getting plenty of rest?
if and when do naggin injuries occur, do you shelve them? do you remind them about the last appointment and doctor suggestion and that the knee wrap is still in the bag? How much rest is enough, or should I even be worried (i'm sure there is some DD up now, twiddling away on myspace, barely eating dinner)....

This is my daughters first year of middle school ball. Practice or game 6 days a week. School believes homework is necessary every night. With getting off the bus at 3:30, quick snack, dress for practice, practice 5:30-7:30(or game), home by 8, get dinner, then up till 11 or 12 doing homework, it has been crazy. We are now starting to see injuries like never before, pulled muscles, aches and pains. This is a girl who works out year round and is in shape, so I have been wondering the same thing...when to say...Too Much. Only a couple weeks left though so...

Statman---no question our girls don't get enough sleep, but they're active teens and it's the nature of the beast. ?They'd be draggin' arse in the AM even if they got 12 hrs of sack time. ? ;)

I can't back this up without a little research, but I'm pretty sure I've seen it somewhere that at least 9-10 hours of sleep for teens would be optimal, and we all know they're not getting anywhere near that amount.

Common sense tells us that something's gonna suffer if they're trying to fore-go sleep to fit in more (whether it's work/sports/fun, whatever). ?It could be psychological or physiological---and yes, I believe injuries related to fatigue would definitely be seen.

I think about all we can do, as parents, is to try not to let them obligate themselves to too many extracurriculars, and curtail some of the distractions (tv, phone, mall, etc) as needed.

Sleep? They seem to function well with minimal, but just crash when burnout truly kicks in.

Now a nagging injury is a different animal. I say listen to the doctor to a T. Not the trainer, your doctor. That's why the trainer is a trainer and not an orthopedic. Ours as a sophomore first time as a Varsity starter, broke a bone on top of her foot last year and was back in three weeks fitted with a foot brace that she wears to this day for support when she plays. She did everything the doctor wanted her to do exercise wise and even though it was sore to stretch with the bands he gave her, she did them and was determined to get back in there, but only if she was cleared. Disappointed, yes, but understood the long range possibilities if she didn't take care of it properly.

You only have one body and hundreds of games...

Nagging injuries? My dd pulls a hammie at 1p.m., 24 hours later healed! :( I hate being old! :-/ Back in the day I remember healing fast, but not as fast as my dd. I beleive all the hormones in the milk and meat are the true cause. Do you see how frickin big some of these girls are at 12u!!

i think alot of it is attributed to rest...the first week of tryouts, all i heard was, "my knees, my back" a day later she's running up the stairs and doing cartwheels...i tell her , duh, you're working out more...god knows she doesn't take dad's advice

Mine is in bed by 9;30-10 every school night. we live close to school so , she does'nt rise til 7am. So she gets 9 hours about every night. Weekends are different , up 2 hours or more later, sleeps 1-3 hours or more later. Never naps.

NOT looking foward to when she needs more than 15-20 min to prepare herself for school. At 6th grade she is not yet that mature that she worries about her looks for the boys. I certainly could be wrong (I'm sure many dad's have been ;D ) but I don't foresee her ever spending 45-60 preparing herself to go out or to school. MD
