There is value to having a known player instead of a wildcard, assuming what is known is good. When I am choosing amongst the girls on the bubble, I will give the nod to the returning player. Sometimes the bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

I guess the real issue is, how much better does the new player have to be to beat out a returning player? If she is substantially better, or if she pretty much the same, then it's a relatively easy call. Picking the tipping point is why managers get paid the big money. :D

Then I would suggest you take off the friend goggles! One player will honestly be better than the other; especially if you think of the team's needs. It's the fit on the team that is important, not what is known vs. unknown. More than likely the coach many feel they have the same ability because of familiarity with the old player. I personally have never seen two even players, I would suggest, think harder! One player may perform better in games or have other contributing intangibles (not her parents helping, but in the game, practice, off season type stuff).
The coach making that decision will know, because they just know...I guess, it's a gut feel.

There are some good and bad aspects of parents as coach's that I have seen that have affected there spot and playing time in the past. Most of it was controlled by the parent by either knowing what makes there kid refocus when they need too or just aggravating them till nothing changes. Those are good and bad ones that I mentioned. The ones that would bother me the most would be the player using parent coach as a crutch for not giving full effort without losing playing time.Or the parent coach making excuses for such play. You typically don't see this at the top levels of game due to intolerance by org leaders, and parents wise to it.As far as the original question I say unless your asked back, your right back with everyone else trying out.
