What is the difference between ASA, NSA, and USSSA rules regarding being rostered on more than one travel ball team?

So in other words, if your dd is currently on a travel ball team she cannot sub or guest for another team for a tournament?

If your dd's team plays straight ASA, she could sub for a straight NSA/USSSA team. Otherwise, don't do it.

Isn't one enough?....

Yes, one is enough but I am looking for a rules interpretation, not a philosophical opinion. So any player who has an open weekend, and is asked to sub or guest for another team is doing this illegally?

I believe that as long as the tournament is not a qualifer of some sort then it shouldnt be a problem.

It all depends on if the tournament is sanctioned by one of the associations. If it is sanctioned, is your DD already rostered to a team within that association? If your DD is not sanctioned on a team in that association and her current team has no intentions get getting into that association this year, then she should be ok by subbing.

Most of the younger age group parents are totally unaware of the rostering restrictions. It is part of the travel parents learning curve. They depend, and rightfully so, on a coach from their current organization to inform them of these rules. However, when you have coaches who are just as green as the parents, it is the blind leading the blind.

Now, if a coach asks you to sub on a weekend and he tells you that for that weekend, your new name is (Insert any name besides your own), then run away fast.:D

How about this one, if a player is a sub on a team that is playing in a ASA qualifier tournament and that team wins that tournament. Is that player allowed to play on her regular team in any other ASA qualifier any time after that?

If this qualifier is run by-the-book and rosters were verified, which means that the girl actually has been rostered, and that team earns a berth and accepts that berth, then the roster is frozen.

Bill:

Are you sure about the requirement that the team actually earn and accept a berth before the roster is frozen? I've got a full plate today and can't revisit the ASA Code to check, but it's my recollection that being on an official roster in a "Championship Play" tournament (which includes ASA Eastern qualifiers and ASA USA qualifiers) means the player is frozen.

I'll try to research this over the weekend and post.

There are some other issues to consider as well: if your DD is subbing in an ASA sanctioned qualifier at a higher age group than her regular team's age, she could be forfeiting her ability to play in the lower age ASA tournaments. Again, I would have to return to a line by line analysis of the ASA Code to give all the details.

Well, as par for the course with the ASA Code, it is clear as mud and I screwed it up a little.

One section has this:

Article 502 ROSTERS. A team's roster becomes official when a commissioner or designee signs it for championship play. Each team is permitted pick up players according to Article 503 of this code.
A. Rosters. Male rosters shall include only male players and female rosters shall include only female players.
B. Number of Players. A championship roster can only have a maximum of 20 players, including pick up players. A manager or coach shall not count as a player unless listed as one. Player(s) names cannot be removed or replaced once the player on the roster has participated in championship play.
EXCEPTION: Released Player. See definition in ASA Code Article 106 ( P )( 03 ).

The exception is new for this year. So, what is Championship Play?
Championship Play is a tournament or competition from which the winner or the winner and other selected teams may advance to higher levels of play of this Association (See Article 508, Levels of Championship Play of this Code ).

Player Release is for a player that has participated on a team in championship play. They may be released from a team after participating in Championship Play, but it shall be prior to the State / Metro Association roster change deadline and shall have written approval from the Coach and Player / Parent Guardian ( if under age 18 ). For Junior Olympic Players, if the Manager / Coach and Parent / Guardian are one and the same, there needs to be an additional Manager / Coach signature. For Adult Players if the Manager / Coach And the Player are one and the same, there needs to be an additional Manager /Coach signature. This Player Release Form must be approved via signature by the State / Metro Association Commissioner or his / her designee.

And then later on, there is this:

Article 513 NATIONAL QUALIFER TOURNAMENTS.
A. National Qualifier Tournaments. These tournaments are to be coordinated through the regional directors. Junior Olympic National Qualifier Tournaments must be scheduled to be completed at least twelve (12) days prior to the first game of their prospective Junior Olympic National Championship Final.
B. Eligible Teams. The tournaments shall be open to all member teams; however, a limit on the number of entries may be necessary because of the number of fields available for play.
NOTE: A Junior Olympic Class B team may participate in a Class A National Qualifier. Participation in a higher classification could affect the team?s classification.
C. Rosters. Teams must compete in accordance with Article 502 of this Code. Once a team has qualified for a National Championship Final through participation in a National Qualifier that team shall not be permitted to change their roster.

The definition of a qualified team:

Qualified Team is a team who has earned and accepted a berth to an ASA / USA National Championship Final or an ASA National Championship Final.

That's what I get for not reading the 2012 edition

I can only speak to the NSA side of this question. We have no provisions for guest players. All players that participate in a NSA qualifier have to be on the roster of the team they are playing with. Once a player has been released, they can not go back to the team that released them until the following season begins (Sept 1).

There are a couple of release periods in NSA with one being during Sept 1 to Dec 31, and the other being Jan 1 to August 31. A player can be released once during the fall period (9-1 to 12-31), and go to another team and then get a second release for the winter/spring/summer season (1-1 to 8-31).

This is something that NSA went to so teams can still field fall teams and not lock up a girl all season who is not of there normal team.
