Runners on 1st and 3rd, ball hit towards 2nd base, ball hits the runner going to 2nd base. Runner is out, does the runner have to go back to 3rd? Umpire said if that is the case, the batter has to come back to bat again, sarcasm I think.

If the runner is out due to interference, then the ball is immediately dead. Any other runners must go back to the last base touched at the time of the interference. The batter is placed on first base.

Just to clarify, runners that are not forced to advance are returned to the last base. If the ball had hit R1 off 3B, R2 would be placed at 2B.

R3 is called out, which removes the force on R1 and R2. They are returned to 3B and 2B.

If R2 were hit, R1 would be returned to 3B and R3 would be placed at 2B.

Then the 1st base player was not playing up the line??? Do I have this wrong? Is it not true that most of the time in ASA Fastpitch Softball, the 1st baseman is inside the base line and therefore the batted ball has "passed a fielder (not the pitcher)" and it doesn't matter if the runner is hit by the ball? (Unless they did so intentionally, of course.)

Definitely...maybe!

We can give you the rule, but we can't tell you where the fielders were playing if we didn't see it. Do first basemen often play in front of the baseline. Yes. Always? No.

Don't forget that even if the ball was past F3, the other part of the rule is if another fielder still had a chance to make a play. Maybe the ball passed F3, but F4 was still behind the runner and could have made a play. In that case, it would still be interference and the runner would still be out.
