Another esoteric scoring rule regarding mid-inning pitching changes is the previous pitcher is responsible for the number of runners they leave on base (less ones picked off or caught stealing) rather than the specific runners. Example: Pitcher#1 exits with Runner#1 on 1B. The next batter hits into a FC where R1 is retired. Runner#2 that reached base on the FC belongs to Pitcher#1, not Pitcher#2.

Because Runner#2 reached base on a FC, she is only a potential earned run if Runner#1 was. Example: Runner#2 would be an unearned run if Runner#1 reached on an error.
