SCRIMMAGES

Here is a question for high school coaches that I think I know the answer. In March a high school team scrimmages a 14U traveling team, consisting of all Jr high players, with some from the same high school. Legal ? If no players from your school system is it legal?

Sounds like it would be illegal.

The OHSAA is very clear in each sport about Jr. High students participating in practice with High School students.

It is my impression that this regulation is in regards to junior high students within your school. OP stated that these players were not from within the school. I don't think there would be a violation in my opinion, but I always call OHSAA to confirm, because you never know how they will decide. And sometimes, one commissioner will give you a completely different ruling than another commissioner might....

Doesn't the Junior High have to field a team for this to be problematic?

The two relevant sections in the OHSAA bylaws are:

1-1-2 Students enrolled below the seventh grade are ineligible for participation in interscholastic athletics. Students enrolled in grades 7 or 8 are ineligible for interscholastic competition on the same squad with students in grade 9 or higher.

2-2-3 Ninth grade students are not permitted to compete in interscholastic competition on the same team or squad with students below ninth grade.

Note that while these sections are not marked as changing, it appears that the phrases "on the same squad" and "on the same team or squad" has been added since the last time I read them.
