She's Just A Little Girl

I saw this and maybe switched it from boy to girl, but it is so relevant. I know I have forgotten this, but I think most of us have at some time.

She's Just A Little Girl

She stands at the plate with her heart pounding fast
The bases are loaded, the die has been cast
Mom and Dad can not help her, she stands all alone
A hit at this moment would send the team home
The ball nears the plate, she swings and she misses
There's a groan from the crowd, with some boo's and hisses

A thoughtless voice yells, "Strike out the bum!"
Tears fill her eyes, the game's no longer fun
Remember - she's just a girl who stands all alone
So open your heart and give her a break
For it's moments like this a woman you can make
Keep this in mind when you hear someone forget
She's just a little girl, not a woman yet.

It's hard to remember, especially when these players are so talented. We have the opportunity to see these girls become women, and we are teaching them all along the way. All of us, not just the coaches!

I hope the middle school coaches understand this too ...My DD's 7th grade coach hands the girls the volleyball tryout schedule the last week of school ,and my DD tells the coach that she will be in nationals that week for softball , and the coach says, that she will have to make a choice! My DD says that shes had the softball tournament planned since December . Coach says thats too bad! you cant do both, rules are rules! Wow! I asked my DD what she wants to do? she said softball!! I just think its crazy to tell an 11 year old to choose!

In Ohio, the OHSAA official start date (first day of coaching) is 08/06/12. If the school is an OSHAA member, then the coach cannot make anything mandatory before that date...in other words, that is the first date a coach can hold tryouts. What national are you in that goes beyond 08/05/12?

Typically the school's sports can't officially start until after Nationals take place. ASA typically knows most states contact rules. It may be a bit different in the Middle School. Find out when the legal contact day is for Volleyball. They may have to move the tryouts back. Secondly, take it above them if that does not work. Especially at the younger ages, it is very valuable to play multiple sports. If she wants to play Volleyball, keep trying and a door may open, even if you need to kick it open. Good luck.

OHSAA Girls Volleyball Information

2012 Season Start Date Reminder
The official start date for volleyball practice is August 6, 2012. The first preview is permitted on Friday, August 24 and the first regular season contest may be played on Saturday, August 25.

Copied from OHSAA. Not sure if any exception for tryouts, but doubt it.

Im sorry ; not national, but myrtle beach world series , starts the 6th i believe with opening ceremonies, but i believe play starts tues or wednesday. they are a oshaa member. We have made the decision that this could be a good warning sign of what the coach is like and 7th grade volleybal will not be a conflict for softball.

For the last two years I have a girl that also plays travel basketball. There are a few conflicting weekends. I sat down with the parents prior to the season and worked it out so that the girl can do both. As a coach I always miss her during the few scheduling conflicts we have, but there is no way I'm going to ask a 12 or 13 year old girl to choose. This game isn't about me it is about the kids. This young lady is an exceptional athlete in both sports. Who knows which direction she will ultimately take. I don't want my ego to limit this kids choices. I've been told by coaches that they wouldn't put up with it. I still think I'm doing the best thing for the kid.
