SANTEE, Calif. – On a day that the San Diego Christian Hawks celebrated our nation's veterans, they also celebrated their first wins of the season. Taking inspiration from the brave soldiers in attendance, San Diego Christian defeated the visiting University of Saint Katherine Firebirds 4-1 in game one, and 9-6 in game 2 of today's doubled header.

The day began with a ceremonial first pitch by 94-year-old, Marine Corps veteran Charlie Stockwell, the grandfather of SDC head coach Sarah Hershman-McGrath. Mr. Stockwell served in an artillery unit on Guadalcanal, and saw action in Guam and Okinawa during World War II. His service to our country continued as a tank commander during the Korean War in 1950. All of the players, coaches and fans showed their appreciation for this true American hero.

Game 1

The Hawks got off to a quick start by plating 2 runs in the first inning. After being walked in the leadoff spot, Joselle Nicolas, was driven in when Noemi Farfan singled with bases loaded. Two batters later, Julianna Campusano was hit by a pitch and Montana Potts scored what proved to be the game winning run.

Saint Katherine got one run back in the second, but the Hawks would add an additional run in the third on a Firebird error, and one more in the fourth on an RBI single by Jennifer Rivera. That was all the Hawks pitcher Madison Bostick, who scattered 5 hits over 7 innings, would need to secure the 4-1 victory.

Game 2

The second game in the double header provided metaphorical fireworks for the veterans in attendance. The Hawks jumped out to a quick 3-run lead in the first inning on a two-run single by Alyssa Paulsen, and another run-scoring single by Erika Silva.

The Firebirds answered immediately in the top of the second and took the lead, scoring 4 runs of their own. The USK advantage would last only one inning. In the bottom of the fourth, San Diego Christian would retake the lead 5-4 on an RBI double by Noemi Farfan and a clutch single by Jennifer Rivera.

The offensive fireworks began in the sixth inning when Saint Katherine grabbed a 6-5 advantage on a two-run homer over the right field fence. In the bottom of the frame, the Hawk's Farfan would crush her second RBI double of the game, knotting the score at 6-6 and setting the stage for a spectacular finish.

The top of the seventh saw San Diego Christian pitcher, Angel Valdez, work her way out of a bases loaded jam to give the Hawks an opportunity to walk the game off. SDC's Joselle Nicolas would provide the grand finale'. With two on and one out, Nicolas crushed a 3-run, no-doubt, bomb over the left field fence to complete the 9-6 Hawks victory.
