DAYTON, Tenn. – For Bryan College softball's Appalachian Athletic Conference opening series, the Lions played host to Milligan College (Tenn.) on Wednesday night. The home team rallied late in game one, which included piecing together a five-spot in the bottom of the fifth. Bryan captured the commanding 7-3 victory before battling in a tight nightcap that took extra innings to determine the outcome. The Lions registered three runs in the third, but the Buffaloes charged back with a tying three-run homerun in the sixth that kept Milligan alive. In the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings, the teams had opportunities to end the game, but neither could capitalize and continued stranding base runners. In the 10th, the international tiebreaker rules went into effect, and Bryan pitcher Sydney West (SR/White House, Tenn.) helped eliminate the threat with a pair of significant strikeouts. Heidi Smith (JR/Cookeville, Tenn.) was placed on second when the Lions had their at-bat. Sydney Olander (SR/Madison, Miss.) swatted a shot through the hole at short, advancing Smith to scoring position at third. With the winning run on third, freshman Austyn Durham (FR/Great Neck, N.Y.) remained poised and delivered a clutch RBI single to left-center, scoring Smith to end the game in walk-off fashion, 4-3.
