No. 25 Marymount California had already lost to No. 9 Vanguard three times this season when the Mariners visited Costa Mesa for a Wednesday showdown with the Lions. MCU loaded the bases in its first at bat of the opener, but was unable to score. VU responded with four hits and two runs in the bottom of the 1st inning to jump in front 2-0. In the 3rd, the Mariners cut the lead in half when Madison Loui singled and Taylor Roberts doubled, and they took the lead in the 4th on Bailee Robicheau's single, which was followed by Diamond Lewis' RBI-single to center. VU tied the game in the 6th, and in the 7th, MCU ace DeAndria Lockett came into relieve Haley Marschall with one out and runners at first and second. Lockett walked the first batter she faced to load the bases, but she fanned the next two to send the game to extra innings.
