SANTEE, Calif. — A close play at the plate and a Bailey Romano grand slam sum up the two games for the SDC softball team.

In Game 1, as the tying runner rounded third, Tori Harris appeared to slide under the tag but was called out to end the game 4-3 in favor of the Spirit before Romano's clinching grand slam in Game 2 gave SDC their first conference win in two years, 9-4 in the split against Ottawa-Arizona.

With the split, the Hawks now sit at 7-14 on the season and 1-5 in GSAC play. The Spirit are now 4-18 overall and 1-8 in conference.

OUAZ scored first in the first game with two runs in the second and a run in the third to lead 3-0 after three. The Hawks were able to get on the board in the bottom of the fourth with an Emily Espino single to right field that scored Romano.

SDC tied the game and forced extra innings as Elizabeth Wilson singled to shortstop that scored Espino. Joselle Nicolas then singled to center field scoring Madison Potts. With the winning run on third and one out, SDC was unable to get the run across in the two attempts as the game went into the eighth.

With runners placed on second, the Spirit advanced the runner on second to third via a sac bunt and later scored that run on a sac fly. The Hawks followed that same script with a sac bunt from Romano as Noemi Farfan hit a ball to center field. But unlike the Spirit, Harris was called out at the plate to give the Spirit the win.

Madison Bostick started the game for the Hawks but left early from an injury. She allowed three runs on six hits with four strikeouts. Madelyn Jacobs was tabbed with the loss in her five innings of relief. She only allowed one hit and the run was unearned.

OUAZ started off the second game with a run in the top of the first off of Jacobs. But the Hawks scored two in the bottom half of the inning. Romano tripled to center to score Farfan, who then later scored on a wild pitch.

Leading 3-1 in the fourth, the Spirit scored three in the top half of the inning to take a 4-3 lead. SDC tied it up in the fifth with a run off an Espino single. In the sixth, Alicia Corona singled home Kaylyn Rubalcava before Romano's grand slam to clinch the win.

Romano was 3-4 with five RBI. She was a double short of the cycle. Farfan went 2-4 with three runs and picked up the win with three innings of relief. She only allowed a hit and faced one batter over the minimum.

SDC will be back on the diamond on Saturday as they host Arizona Christian at Grossmont College. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
